Librarian I-Teen job duties include but are not limited to:
- Provides advanced library services to internal and external customers; promote the library’s collection and services through instruction, tours, displays, programs, and other activities; duties may be added to ensure the day-to-day workflow and service delivery in the public library.
- Promote library services and programs that provide customers with a variety of opportunities to enhance their library visit.
- Prepare and conduct library tours including information literacy classes, and tours for school groups, community organizations and the general public to promote the library’s collection and services; and create and/or conduct special programs to promote the library’s collection and services.

- Plan and create library displays to increase internal and external customer awareness of the library’s collection, community resources, or other salient information

- Position deals heavily with technology education programming: gaming, using creative technology such as Cameo Silhouette, iMacs, etc.

Summary:
The Board of Trustees of Charlotte County Library is currently seeking a Library Director with a vision for the future of the library, experience leading dynamic staff, a deep knowledge of library practices, and a passion for working with a rural community. The Library Director is the chief administrator of Charlotte County Public Library, and is responsible for planning, implementing, and directing all functions of the library – everything from day-to-day operations to long-range planning. As the face of the library, the director must communicate clearly with members of the public, local and state government, community organizations, library staff, and the Library Board of Trustees.
Charlotte County Library is the public library system for Charlotte County, VA (pop. 12,000). With branches in Charlotte Court House, Keysville, Phenix, and Wylliesburg, the library has been serving members of the community since 1937. The Main Library in Charlotte Court House houses the Local History and Genealogy Room, which is open to the public for research purposes. The library has a collection of approximately 37,000 items, and the annual budget is just over $400,000. A rural county in south central Virginia, Charlotte is known for its rich history, beautiful countryside, good schools, and affordable living. Only thirty minutes southwest of Farmville, and just over an hour from both Lynchburg and Richmond, Charlotte County is close to everything one would need, while still providing the peace and quiet of the countryside.
This position reports directly to the Board of Trustees of Charlotte County Library and is a full-time, 40 hours/week, salaried position, with benefits commensurate with other salaried county employees. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required.
This position will be available starting June 1, 2026.
Essential Functions:
- Provides leadership and vision for the library. Works with library staff, the Library Board of Trustees, county government, library patrons, community organizations, and library volunteers to evaluate current library practices, advocate for the library, plan for continual improvement of the library, and anticipate future changes to the library.
- Administers and manages library budget, including payroll, and submitting invoices for payment. Works with the Library Board and Library of Virginia to plan future spending, determine financial priorities, and provide responsible financial stewardship. May pursue funding through grants.
- Fulfills requirements established by the Library of Virginia related to state funding. • Manages, directs, and supervises the daily operations of the library, including circulation, reference, IT, collection maintenance, acquisitions, cataloging, marketing, and personnel. • Collects and analyzes library statistics, using information to drive policies, collections, and services. Maintains organized and robust records of library policies, finances, personnel, and statistics, in accordance with the Code of Virginia and the requirements of the Library of Virginia.
- Evaluates, creates, updates, and enforces library policies and procedures consistently across all locations. Works with the Library Board of Trustees to develop and update major policies. • Supports and manages library staff through regular staff meetings, staff development, supervision, scheduling, and hiring decisions. May provide staff performance evaluations. • Works closely with staff to acquire new library materials and maintain collection. The director is the primary selector and buyer for new library materials.
- Evaluates and oversees all library programs. Works with staff to improve, expand, and plan current and future library programs. On occasion, may be solely responsible for certain programs.
- Works closely with third party IT manager to provide reliable, modern, and relevant technologies to library staff and patrons.
- Works with all staff members to promote library collections, services, and programs to the community. The Library Director is also the main advocate for the library in the county government and may attend county government meetings to make requests and answer questions regarding the library.
- Works with library staff and Library of Virginia staff to update and maintain library website. • Collaborates with and encourages library volunteers, including the Friends of the Library, to advocate for the library and support fundraising activities.
- Works with Library Board of Trustees, local government, and staff to maintain library facilities. • At times, the Library Director may provide services directly to patrons. This can include but is not limited to: staffing the service desk, working at a branch location, working on an occasional Saturday, working an occasional evening, providing circulation and reference services, and cataloging or processing of library materials.
- Perform other library duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in library science (MLS) from an ALA-accredited program.
- Three to five years of experience working in a library, preferably a public library. • Three to five years of progressively responsible supervisory experience, preferably in a library environment.
- Knowledge of day-to-day library functions and processes, as well as standard policies and procedures in the library field. This includes at least some knowledge of circulation, reference, collection management, acquisitions, interlibrary loan, integrated library systems, cataloging, marketing, and programming. Knowledge of library trends and technologies.
- Knowledge of how to use office equipment such as photocopiers, printers, computers, and multi-line telephones.
- Proficiency with modern technology, including computers, Windows operating system, Microsoft Office Suite, email, internet searching, minor computer troubleshooting, and Office 365.

Position Summary Under the general direction of the Branch Manager, performs professional, administrative, and supervisory work in planning, implementing, and managing a comprehensive program of services to children and teens and to their adult care givers, parents, and teachers. Develops and maintains several collections for which the Youth Services Division is responsible. Works with the Branch Manager to develop long and short-term goals for the department. Actively participates in Youth Services Division planning in coordination with library administration. Keeps current with new trends in library planning, services, and collection development. Examines operations on a daily basis to ensure that all resources are managed as effectively as possible.
Major Duties
- Oversees the operation of Youth Services within assigned branch. Trains, supervises and evaluates staff and volunteers. Ensures the highest quality service to patrons as established by library policies. Interprets library policies and procedures for staff and patrons and ensures staff understanding and adherence.
- Collaborates with Branch Manager to develop and maintain the layout and appearance of the youth services areas, ensuring a safe and inviting environment filled with relevant resources.
- Monitors the security of the youth services area, including behavior and conduct of library patrons. Resolves problems related to the day-to-day delivery of services, such as reviewing and resolving patron complaints and questions. May assume responsibility for all staff, public, and library building in the absence of the Branch Manager.
- Provides direct service to library patrons by answering reference questions and providing reader’s advisory services by telephone and in person. Assists and instructs patrons in the use of print and online materials and technology.
- Troubleshoots library computers and other technology and reports unresolved problems through the proper channels.
- Proactively develops, organizes, and conducts engaging programs for youth and caregivers which encourage reading, viewing, and listening skills and the use of library facilities and materials to help create lifelong library users. Supervises program presentations by subordinates or outside presenters. Conducts library tours for interested groups including schools, classes, groups, and organizations.

Supervisory Controls Works independently but under the general supervision of the Branch Manager. The Branch Manager indicates general responsibilities, gives special assignments, establishes priorities, and monitors progress in meeting overall goals and objectives. Work is reviewed by observation and through regular conferences for the degree of success achieved in attaining goals and objectives. Formal performance evaluations are conducted annually. The Youth Services Manager exercises direct supervision over paraprofessional and volunteer assistants.

Scope And Effect Patrons receive courteous and informative service and are assisted to locate specific titles or subjects about which they desire information. Patrons, especially children, are stimulated to read, look, listen, question, and learn. Materials developed for story time programs are used smoothly in outreach and library programming. Child care personnel see the library as an essential resource in the effective completion of their own tasks. Adults and children will use the library in ways that result in enhancing their knowledge of what is available and broadening their appreciation for the use of those resources and services that are an extension and reinforcement of their educational, recreational and cultural needs. Patrons have free and convenient access to ideas and information from superior children’s literature at the Handley Regional Library.
Personal Contacts Contacts are with patrons, including adults and children, volunteers, child care workers, school personnel and local agencies to provide direct assistance and information about the Library’s collections, services and programs; with coworkers to coordinate activities and library services and communicate information; with other professionals, vendors, program presenters and publishers’ representatives to learn about child advocacy, new publications, services, programs and technologies; and with subordinates; to train, motivate and supervise.
Physical Demands The Library building requires the ability to climb steps several times a day, lift 25 pounds of books or other library materials; the ability to move furniture, book trucks and tables; the ability to read and project one’s voice for children’s programming; the ability to traverse the Library several times a day and to frequently stop, reach and bend.

Massanutten Regional Library (MRL) is seeking a full-time employee to fill the position of Adult Services Librarian at the Central Library in Harrisonburg, VA.
This position is a regular full-time non-exempt employee, working under the direction of the Head of Adult Services. The regular schedule for this position is 8:30 am – 5 pm four days per week and one 11:30 am – 8:00 pm day per week (tentatively Thursday) and every fourth Saturday 8:30 am – 5 pm. The week with a Saturday rotation has Friday off.
Responsibilities:
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Provides information services to customers of all ages with an emphasis on services to adults.
- Develops, plans, and conducts a variety of library programs and outreach for adults.
- Assists in management of the collection, including weeding and input into collection development.
- Communicates and interprets library policies and procedures to the public. ∙ Serves as the staff member in charge during select hours.
- Assists and instructs patrons in the use of library services and resources. ∙ Conducts library tours for adult groups.
- Works at a public service desk.

Minimum Qualifications:

The Assistant Branch Manager is an integral part of library management supervising coaching, training, directing and evaluating branch employees while creating and delivering outcome driven programs and services to the Chesterfield community.
DUTIES:
- Assist in managing the operations and activities of a library branch including supervising, training and evaluating library professionals and other staff.
- Deliver exceptional customer service.

Suffolk Public Library is looking for someone to lead the Library’s learning and
staff development efforts, oversee the entire employee onboarding process, serve as the library’s leader on equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging trainings, and serve as
volunteer coordinator.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under limited supervision, serves as the supervisor of Learning & Staff Development for the library. Responsible for researching, planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating learning and staff development for all staff and ensures that all services are in alignment with the library and city’s strategic goals. Responsible for developing and implementing all public and staff training and supervising, training, and evaluating staff in their ongoing skill development in partnership with other managers and supervisors, establishing proficiency standards for staff, researching and formulating long range goals, developing guidelines and procedures, and offering occasional public training and informational program development. Facilitates new library staff orientation and onboarding. Serves as the library’s Volunteer Coordinator. Reports to the Director of Libraries.
Essential Job Functions
- Manages, implements, and supervises the operations for Learning and Staff Development for the Suffolk Public Library.
- Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates subordinate staff and provides guidance to volunteers in the work to be performed and ensures compliance with library policies and procedures.
- Manages the library’s learning management system and intranet.
- Performs administrative duties such as preparing and analyzing statistical reports, performing outreach to staff, monitoring discretionary spending of a budget, and delivering trainings and classes.
- Prepares statistical and financial reports for levels of service, attendance, transactions, etc. Prepares and produces financial/budgetary reports monthly.
- Designs, develops, and delivers employee training and development programs through a variety of formats including e-learning, instructor-led classes, and other performance aids; coordinates and oversees the design, development and delivery of such programs/services by library staff.
- Conduct assessments and analyses to define performance, skill and knowledge gaps and recommend training and development to drive individual and department-wide capability and performance improvement.
- Design and develop programs and curriculum, partner with internal subject matter experts (SME) and/or external vendors to achieve defined training, learning and development objectives.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy for training and development programs.
- Establish and maintain individual and organizational performance evaluation methods for training content, delivery, activities, engagement and outcomes. Utilize metrics to validate knowledge transfer and return on investment.
- Partners with the library management team to recommend and develop employee engagement programs and activities that enhance employment experience.
- Identify training needs, recommending and implementing solutions, and evaluating and measuring effectiveness.

- Selects or develops appropriate training materials such as handouts, training handbooks, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, and reference materials.
- Attends or conducts staff meetings to exchange information; attends in-service training and/or professional classes, seminars, or conferences to further develop professional skills.
- Recruiting, training, and supervising new volunteers.
- Collecting volunteer information, availability, and skills, and maintaining an up-to-date database.
- Performs tasks at the circulation desk of the library including checking library materials in and out, preparing books to be shelved, registering and processing library cards, collecting materials for the book depository, and securing the library at the end of the business day.
- Directs, advises, provides, assists, and instructs patrons with locating library materials, answering reference and directional questions, and placing reserve requests.
- Maintains, selects, assigns, and develops a collection based on patron needs and interests.
- Receives, reviews, and responds to patron complaints.
- Monitor and evaluate library public services, facilities and staff in the absence of Library Management.
- May lead, facilitate, and participate in City and department teams to develop strategic plans, resolve problems, and improve current processes.
- Participates in the Library Supervisor Team to set strategic directions, evaluate policies and procedures, develop new programs, services and initiatives and communicate important information and changes with staff.
- Performs related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in education, human resources, technology or a related field, and 3 to 5 years of experience in training, education, or a related field including 1 to 2 years of administrative/supervisory responsibilities; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Requires a valid driver's license.
