The Accidental Library Worker: VLA Professional Associates Forum 2020 Regional Workshop Tour

The Virginia Library Association Professional Associates Forum (VLAPAF) is bringing together library support staff from around the Commonwealth at workshops this Spring and Summer. Here is your chance to network with other library staff as part of our educational training series. The series is proudly sponsored by The Library of Congress Federal Credit Union (LCFCU). Each workshop will feature a discussion of Cataloging/Technical Services/Collections, presentations about setting SMART goals (professionally and personally), roundtable discussions of topics relevant to YOU and a break for lunch, where you’ll be welcome to chat with others about your experiences working in your library.

Did you plan to work in libraries? Were you looking for a change and just happened to come across library work? Are you are new to the library world? Your voice and experience matter. As part of our workshop, we’ll be looking for you to tell us what you want from continuing education experiences – since we will be hosting a conference in 2021 geared specifically to library support staff – and you can help shape the future of those events,

Are you new to VLA? This is a great way to learn more about what other libraries are doing in VA. We encourage staff at academic, public, government, special and law libraries to attend.

Registration for the workshops is now open. Cost is $20 for VLA members, $30 for non-VLA members. You will be able to specify dietary restrictions on the registration form.

The Accidental Library Worker events are from 10am-4pm:

  • March 4th: Longwood University
  • April 6th: Mary D. Pretlow Anchor Branch, Norfolk Public Library
  • May 6th: Chinn Park Regional Library
  • May 21st: Crozet Library
  • July 15th: Washington County Library, Main Library Branch
  • August 6th: Henrico County Libraries

Thank you in advance for your support of this program.
Sincerely,
Kristi Jerome, Longwood University: Chair, VLA Professional Associates Forum
Isaak Hopson, Virginia Commonwealth University: Co-Chair, VLA Professional Associates Forum
and the members of the VLA Professional Associates Forum Board

Changes to VLA Conference Discount Structure

January 14, 2020
By Lisa R. Varga, VLA Executive Director

Effective with our 2020 Annual Conference, the Virginia Library Association is changing its structure for discounts for those who shape and create our conference.

All VLA Council Chairs, members of the VLA Executive Committee and the members of the Conference Committee will receive a discount code for $75 off their conference fees for the year(s) in which they are serving the Association. All Presenters will also receive a discount of $75 (up to two presenters per session, up to two presenters per poster, and up to two presenters per lighting talk.)

Award Committee Chairs will also be given a complimentary ticket to the Annual Scholarship and Awards banquet.

This new structure ensures that the individuals who work (in some cases, for up to 18 months) to bring a conference to fruition are given a small token of VLA’s appreciation for hours of service.

After a cost structure analysis of the 2019 VLA Conference and projection of income and expenses for the 2020 conference, VLA is moving forward with this change, which provides a more equitable distribution of discounts to our members, presenters and attendees.

VLA CaTS Technical Services Regional Learning Workshop Series

This spring, please join us for our second annual regional Learning Workshops! We will meet with other technical service departments and discuss topics related to cataloging, collection development, processing, collection layout/space, database maintenance, collaboration, tools, applications, and workflows. The agenda will be created by the topics you provide us at time of registration. After the discussion there will be an optional off-site lunch (details will be provided closer to the event) for anyone who wants to join us for additional conversation and networking opportunities.

Each regional workshop is limited to 30 participants, so register today: https://forms.gle/Tesf2E9MmuLQJZRK7. Please note that since each session is limited to 30 people, we ask that larger library systems please limit their initial registration to 4 people.

If you have any questions, please feel free to e mail Easter DiGangi at [email protected] or Virginia Phelps at [email protected].

We hope to see you there!
