Beta Phi Mu Conference Support Award given to “The Innovative Library Classroom.”

“The Innovative Library Classroom” is the recipient of the 2016 Beta Phi Mu Conference Support Award. This annual award provides a $500 grant to a new and/or small conference, symposium, forum, or similar event which is open to attendance by LIS practitioners and is aligned with Beta Phi Mu’s core values of scholarship, leadership, and service. “The Innovative Library Classroom,” to be held on May 12, 2016, in Radford, VA, will explore teaching and learning in the library environment.
Beta Phi Mu is the International Library and Information Science Honor Society. Since its founding in 1948, thousands of outstanding LIS students have been initiated into the society on the strength of their academic record and the recommendation of their school’s faculty. Beta Phi Mu promotes excellence in the LIS professions through a robust program of scholarships, awards, and publications.
The Conference Support Award selection committee chose “The Innovative Library Classroom” because of its collaborative, multi-institutional approach; relevant and timely focus; appeal across types of libraries; and demonstrated congruity with the society’s core values. Applications for next year’s award will be accepted starting in September 2016.

2016 National Library Legislative Day
Registration for National Library Legislative Day 2016 has opened! The event will be held in Washington, D.C. on May 2-3, 2016 at the Liaison Hotel.
This two-day advocacy event brings hundreds of librarians, trustees, library supporters, and patrons to Washington, D.C. to meet with their Members of Congress to rally support for library issues and policies. As with previous years, participants will receive advocacy tips and training, along with important issue briefings prior to their meetings.
Your firsthand library experience - from behind the reference desk or as a patron - is an invaluable part of helping legislators to understand the impact that libraries have in the day to day lives of their constituents. I hope you will consider joining us!

2016 VLA Election Results
The Virginia Library Association is pleased to announce the newly-elected members of our Executive Committee.
Vice President/President-Elect: Keith Weimer, University of Virginia (3-year position)
Treasurer: Shaunna Hunter, Hampden-Sydney College (2-year position)
Second VP: M. Teresa Doherty, Virginia Commonwealth University (2-year position)
Keith, Shaunna and Teresa will assume their new responsibilities following the Friday morning Business Meeting (10/23) at the VLA Annual Conference in Richmond. They will join the other members of the VLA Executive Committee:
