Full-time Adult Services Librarian at Central Library (Harrisonburg) 

Massanutten Regional Library (MRL) is seeking a full-time employee to fill the position of Adult Services Librarian at the Central Library in Harrisonburg, VA.  

This position is a regular full-time non-exempt employee, working under the direction of  the Head of Adult Services. The regular schedule for this position is 8:30 am – 5 pm four  days per week and one 11:30 am – 8:00 pm day per week (tentatively Thursday) and  every fourth Saturday 8:30 am – 5 pm. The week with a Saturday rotation has Friday off. 

Responsibilities

Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Provides information services to customers of all ages with an emphasis on  services to adults. 
  • Develops, plans, and conducts a variety of library programs and outreach for  adults.  
  • Assists in management of the collection, including weeding and input into  collection development. 
  • Communicates and interprets library policies and procedures to the public. Serves as the staff member in charge during select hours. 
  • Assists and instructs patrons in the use of library services and resources.  Conducts library tours for adult groups.  
  • Works at a public service desk. 
  • Promotes and represents the library before outside groups. 
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned to further the goals and objectives of  MRL. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited post-secondary institution or  acceptable equivalent. Has a Virginia Librarian’s Professional Certificate or is able to acquire  one within two months of hire. 

Other Skills: 

  • Knowledge of standard reference resources. 
  • Thorough knowledge of library materials in several broad subject areas. Skills in standard reference and research procedures and thorough knowledge of online search strategies and resources. 
  • Knowledge of the principles and experience in the practices of public library functions.  
  • Knowledge of the principles of library management, including collection development, planning, coordination, personnel management, and budgeting. 
  • Knowledge of basic computer functions; aptitude for learning, maintaining, and explaining the operations of the SirsiDynix circulation/cataloging system and operation of the library's public Internet service. 
  • Working skill in the use of library facilities and resources; basic skills in cataloging and preparing bibliographies. 
  • Ability to select appropriate reading materials for patrons of varying reading skill levels and interests. 
  • Ability to instruct and train non-professional library staff in library methods and procedures. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to interpret library resources and services to the public and to the general community. 
  • Ability to supervise and direct reference volunteers and work-study students. Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus. 

The physical demands for this position include the ability to operate a wide variety of office/technology equipment, the ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, and to push/pull loaded library carts frequently.

Massanutten Regional Library operates as a private nonprofit regional library system.  We have seven library branches that serve the City of Harrisonburg, Page County, and  Rockingham County. Master’s degree in library science; three years of professional library experience (preferably in a public library) to include wide-ranging experience with technology, advanced search skills, and using social media applications. One year of experience in a supervisory or lead capacity which can include the documented supervision of volunteers; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Must possess or be able to obtain a Librarian’s Professional Certificate by the State of Virginia.

Chesterfield Public Library is seeking an Assistant Branch Manager to join its team of innovative, forward-thinking professionals in providing engaging information services to a vibrant and appreciative community.

The Assistant Branch Manager is an integral part of library management supervising coaching, training, directing and evaluating branch employees while creating and delivering outcome driven programs and services to the Chesterfield community.

DUTIES:

  • Assist in managing the operations and activities of a library branch including supervising, training and evaluating library professionals and other staff.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service.
  • Recommend and direct the implementation, application and monitoring of library policies, procedures, goals and objectives.
  • Develop and direct branch programs. Participate on system-wide teams to plan and develop innovative library programming.

Suffolk Public Library is looking for someone to lead the Library’s learning and

staff development efforts, oversee the entire employee onboarding process, serve as the library’s leader on equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging trainings, and serve as

volunteer coordinator.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under limited supervision, serves as the supervisor of Learning & Staff Development for the library. Responsible for researching, planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating learning and staff development for all staff and ensures that all services are in alignment with the library and city’s strategic goals. Responsible for developing and implementing all public and staff training and supervising, training, and evaluating staff in their ongoing skill development in partnership with other managers and supervisors, establishing proficiency standards for staff, researching and formulating long range goals, developing guidelines and procedures, and offering occasional public training and informational program development. Facilitates new library staff orientation and onboarding. Serves as the library’s Volunteer Coordinator. Reports to the Director of Libraries.

Essential Job Functions

  • Manages, implements, and supervises the operations for Learning and Staff Development for the Suffolk Public Library.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates subordinate staff and provides guidance to volunteers in the work to be performed and ensures compliance with library policies and procedures.
  • Manages the library’s learning management system and intranet.  
  • Performs administrative duties such as preparing and analyzing statistical reports, performing outreach to staff, monitoring discretionary spending of a budget, and delivering trainings and classes.
  • Prepares statistical and financial reports for levels of service, attendance, transactions, etc. Prepares and produces financial/budgetary reports monthly.
  • Designs, develops, and delivers employee training and development programs through a variety of formats including e-learning, instructor-led classes, and other performance aids; coordinates and oversees the design, development and delivery of such programs/services by library staff.
  • Conduct assessments and analyses to define performance, skill and knowledge gaps and recommend training and development to drive individual and department-wide capability and performance improvement.
  • Design and develop programs and curriculum, partner with internal subject matter experts (SME) and/or external vendors to achieve defined training, learning and development objectives.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy for training and development programs.
  • Establish and maintain individual and organizational performance evaluation methods for training content, delivery, activities, engagement and outcomes. Utilize metrics to validate knowledge transfer and return on investment.
  • Partners with the library management team to recommend and develop employee engagement programs and activities that enhance employment experience.
  • Identify training needs, recommending and implementing solutions, and evaluating and measuring effectiveness.
  • Schedules training sessions, develops registration procedures, ensures that the facility is set up, ensures that employees are notified, and coordinates other practical elements involved with planning professional development activities
  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of a comprehensive training strategy ensuring strategic alignment of training and development with business goals.
  • Utilize industry standards to design and conduct staff assessments; develop individual and/or group strategies; and analyze data to determine department current and future needs.
  • Develop strategies to meet training needs; and develop short and long-range plans and objectives for training and staff development programs.
  • Plan, develop and conduct training to a diverse group; coordinate with library managers and other City departments to develop and/or provide access to web-based instruction to promote research skills and information literacy; and develop training objectives and monitor employee learning.
  • Identifies regional and national training resources and coordinates the Suffolk Public Library's participation.
  • Assist on organizational development projects.
  • Maintain current knowledge of trends, policies, methods and technologies in the library field.
  • Implement changes when appropriate.
  • Coaches and supports employees with developing their skills and improving job performance.
  • Research, seek and manage professional development grants; and develop and monitor Suffolk Public Library training budget.
  • Facilitates new library staff orientation and onboarding.
  • Researches and implements new methods of training delivery to facilitate different learning styles and changing education needs.
  • Coordinates continuing education opportunities for all staff and actively seeks out development opportunities to bring to library staff.
  • Assesses the success of each training session, studies follow-up evaluations, prepares related reports, and recommends improvements.
  • Serves as a resource staff to identify and access professional literature, training materials, and training opportunities.
  • Partner with SME to plan, conduct and deliver Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) learning identifying unconscious bias, gender norms, and terminology.
  • Coordinates and implements DEI learning to include tutorial, in-person and virtual sessions; provide tools for continued DEI discussions that achieve long lasting impact. Assist with the design and delivery of programs and initiatives to attract, retain and promote a diverse and inclusive workforce.
  • Develop, plan, and lead training programs; ensure all aspects meet departmental needs, areas such as leadership development, instructional best practices, and improvement initiatives.
  • Selects or develops appropriate training materials such as handouts, training handbooks, demonstration models, multimedia visual aids, and reference materials.
  • Attends or conducts staff meetings to exchange information; attends in-service training and/or professional classes, seminars, or conferences to further develop professional skills.
  • Recruiting, training, and supervising new volunteers.
  • Collecting volunteer information, availability, and skills, and maintaining an up-to-date database.
  • Performs tasks at the circulation desk of the library including checking library materials in and out, preparing books to be shelved, registering and processing library cards, collecting materials for the book depository, and securing the library at the end of the business day.
  • Directs, advises, provides, assists, and instructs patrons with locating library materials, answering reference and directional questions, and placing reserve requests.
  • Maintains, selects, assigns, and develops a collection based on patron needs and interests.
  • Receives, reviews, and responds to patron complaints.
  • Monitor and evaluate library public services, facilities and staff in the absence of Library Management.
  • May lead, facilitate, and participate in City and department teams to develop strategic plans, resolve problems, and improve current processes.
  • Participates in the Library Supervisor Team to set strategic directions, evaluate policies and procedures, develop new programs, services and initiatives and communicate important information and changes with staff.
  • Performs related work as required.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in education, human resources, technology or a related field, and 3 to 5 years of experience in training, education, or a related field including 1 to 2 years of administrative/supervisory responsibilities; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Requires a valid driver's license.
