Job Announcement

Coordinates system-wide services, activities, outreach, and programming to children age birth to 5 and their caregivers. Works with branch staff to develop and/or provide direct programs for preschoolers and their caregivers. Enhances partnerships with schools, county agencies, and non-profits. Presents professional development workshops, book talks, or informational sessions for organizations and branch staff who work with children age birth to 5. Analyzes effectiveness of programming efforts, goals, and objectives; summarizes findings and recommends improvements. Makes written and oral presentations to boards, community groups, schools, and other organizations. Trains and supervises Early Literacy Assistants and volunteers. Performs other duties as may be assigned to further the goals and objectives of Fairfax County Public Library.

Salary: The salary offer will be in the minimum to midpoint ($60,056.05 to $80,075.01) and will not exceed the mid-point of the advertised compensation range. Compensation rules apply per Fairfax County Personnel Regulations for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees.

Schedule: Scheduling flexibility is imperative. Occasional overtime, evening and weekend hours for outreach and programming duties may be required.

Illustrative Duties

  • Serves on Branch Management Team;
  • Serves as person-in-charge;
  • May schedule staff and plan workflow to ensure adequate coverage;
  • Resolves non-routine patron interactions by communicating and interpreting library policy for staff and the general public;
  • Addresses the more difficult and complex reference and reader advisory services;
  • Promotes and represents Library System before outside groups;
  • May develop informational finding tools;
  • May select, train, supervise, and evaluate subordinate personnel;
  • May facilitate staff meetings;
  • Answers informational and reference questions from customers using print and electronic resources;
  • Assists and instructs customers in the use of print and online materials and technology;

  • Maintains collection by weeding, marketing, and merchandising library materials;

Youth Services Manager at a Regional Library Only

  • Directly supervises youth services within the branch;
  • Managers all activities of the youth service department at a regional library;
  • Oversees the management of the youth collection in the branch;
  • Serves as a system resource for reader's advisory and programming for youth;
  • May partner with schools and community organizations to provide library services for youth and teens.

Adult Services Manager at a Regional Library Only

  • Directly supervises adult services within the branch;
  • Managers all activities of the adult service department at a regional library;
  • Oversees the management of the adult collection in the branch;
  • Serves as a system resource for reader's advisory and programming for adults;
  • May partner with community organizations to provide library services to adults.

Virginia Room Manager Only

  • Plans and supervises the operations of FCPL's Virginia Room;
  • Selects, evaluates, and manages reference history and genealogy collections and reference services for onsite and distance researchers;
  • Describes, preserves, provides access in both physical and digital formats to special collections materials which include manuscripts, photographic images, and subject files;
  • Promotes knowledge of and use of Virginia Room collections through a variety of programming;
  • Partners with professional and community organizations to promote the preservation and study of local history and genealogy.

Coordinator of Early Literacy or Youth and Teen Services Only

  • Coordinates outreach programs and resources for youth and teens;
  • Organizes system-wide activities and events for youth and teens, such as the children's summer reading program and 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten; 
  • Works with library staff to develop and/or provide direct programs for youth and teens;
  • Analyzes effectiveness of programming efforts, goals and objectives, summarizes findings, and recommends improvements;
  • Identifies, establishes, and maintains partnerships with childcare centers, schools, county agencies, and other organizations;
  • Presents professional development workshops, book talks or informational sessions for teachers and organizations who work with youth and teens;

Cataloging, Acquisitions, Selection, or Evaluation Librarians Only

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  
Master's degree from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited library school and one year of professional library experience. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Two or more years of professional library experience. 
  • Two years of professional experience in early childhood or elementary education. 
  • Experience planning, developing, and facilitating programs and events for children.
  • Experience planning, developing, and facilitating training sessions with adults. 
  • Experience working in partnership with other agencies and organizations. 
  • Expertise in public speaking. 
  • Knowledge of children's literature and early literacy concepts. 
  • Ability to establish priorities, work independently and proceed with objectives with limited supervision. 
  • Ability to use a personal computer, email, and various software packages. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 


CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Driver's license (required)
  • Possession of a certificate issued by the Virginia State Board for Certification of Librarians within three (3) months of date of appointment to the position.


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, child protective services registry check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.  
   
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, wrist and shoulder movements. Ability to push and pull 4-wheeled book bins filled at 90% capacity, requiring 20 lbs. of initial (starting) force, and a sustained force of 10 lbs. after initial acceleration. Ability to push and pull 4-wheeled book carts filled at 70% capacity, requiring 14 lbs. of initial (starting) force, and a sustained force of 7 lbs. after initial acceleration. Ability to shelve materials at all height levels. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Ability to stand for 2 hours at a time. Ability to lift up to 15 lbs. Ability to stoop, bend, reach, squat, and kneel. Ability to travel to various locations throughout Fairfax County to provide coverage, conduct outreach and programming activities, attend meetings and trainings.
