MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master’s degree in library science; three years of professional library experience (preferably in a public library) to include wide-ranging experience with technology, advanced search skills, and using social media applications. One year of experience in a supervisory or lead capacity which can include the documented supervision of volunteers; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
Must possess or be able to obtain a Librarian’s Professional Certificate by the State of Virginia.

Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
 • Considerable knowledge of current principles and practices of library science.
 • Ability to adapt and apply traditional and emerging library technologies
 • Exceptional customer service skills
 • A knowledge of and experience in applying the basic skills of management in a large organization; project management and program development experience to include translating a learned skill/applying innovative ideas into practice.
 • Demonstrated ability to work in a large, team-based collaborative environment and get quantifiable results.
 • Ability to develop strong community relationships and partnerships.
 • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to include making presentations to large groups.
 • Skilled in operating a computer and related software and other technologies
 • Ability to interact with a diverse population to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers
 • Ability to supervise staff and to understand and implement the Chesterfield County Public Library strategic approach.
 • Knowledge and experience in managing and communicating change.
 • Makerspace experience highly desired
 • Experience in managing a library branch preferred but not required
 
WHO WE ARE:
Chesterfield County Public Library (CCPL) is seeking an Assistant Branch Manager to join its team of innovative, forward-thinking professionals in providing engaging information services to a vibrant and appreciative community.
 
The Assistant Branch Manager is an integral part of library management supervising coaching, training, directing and evaluating branch employees while creating and delivering outcome driven programs and services to the Chesterfield community.
 
DUTIES:
 • Assist in managing the operations and activities of a library branch including supervising, training and evaluating library professionals and other staff.
 • Deliver exceptional customer service.
 • Recommend and direct the implementation, application and monitoring of library policies, procedures, goals and objectives.
 • Develop and direct branch programs. Participate on system-wide teams to plan and develop innovative library programming.
 • Use data analysis to evaluate services, recommend staffing, create schedules, request resources. Develop initiatives to support CCPL’s strategic plan. Use data-driven decisions to form program and service recommendations.
 • Coordinate branch participation in CCPL events.
 • Provide engaging learning experiences for customers.
 • Creatively schedule and manage branch resources to offer meaningful and impactful experiences for library customers.
 • Promote community engagement through visits and attendance at community functions, school events, local civic organization meetings, and neighboring businesses and potential partners; develop the branch community profile.
 • Participate in and encourage continuous professional development/technology skill development through readings, webinars, conference attendance and personal learning plans.
 • Perform all duties of a professional librarian and model behaviors for staff.
 • Manage the facility, including communication with after-hours maintenance contacts; serve as person in charge in absence of management. Perform other work as required.
 
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is performed in library office, library locations and other professional settings; extensive use of computers and devices required. Light to medium, occasionally heavy, physical requirements which may include, sitting, standing, walking, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, climbing, stooping, kneeling crouching, keyboarding, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal and reading; not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
