2017 Jefferson Cup Winners and Honor Books Announced

The Steep & Thorny Way and I Dissent win 2017 Jefferson Cup

The Jefferson Cup Committee is pleased to announce that they have selected the 2017 winning and honor titles. The 2017 Jefferson Cup Award winner for Young Adult Readers is The steep and thorny way by Cat Winters. The 2017 Jefferson Cup Award winner for Young Readers is I dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg makes her mark by Debbie Levy.

In The steep and thorny way (Amulet Books), Cat Winters has created a stunning portrayal of 1920s Oregon that reflects the diversity and complexity of the American experience. As a modern twist on Hamlet, Winters succeeds in conveying a murder mystery, love story, and supernatural tale set against a historically accurate background of racism, homophobia, and Prohibition bootlegging.

I dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg makes her mark (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers) by Debbie Levy is a well-researched, vibrant picture book biography of the second female justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Levy connects young readers with her subject using lively text that allows her readers to understand Ruth Bader Ginsburg within a historical context in an engaging manner.

2017 Scholarship Winners Announced

The VLA Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce the 2017 scholarship recipients. Congratulations to Stephani Moore, Whitney Nelsen, and Lauren Triola on their academic excellence and dedication to the field of Library Science.

VLA Paraprofessional Clara Stanley Scholarship
The 2017 recipient of the VLAPF Clara Stanley Scholarship is Whitney Nelsen from Frederick County, VA. Currently, Whitney works for the Handley Regional Library and for the Loudoun County Public Library. She says, “In the library I can feel the impact I’m making, whether I’m working with a doctoral candidate who is doing research for their dissertation or with a homeless person who needs information on community resources. My dedication to helping others and serving the community is what will help me succeed in librarianship.” Whitney has been active in VLA since 2017. She is obtaining her MLIS degree from Valdosta State University.

VLA Scholarships
The 2017 recipients of the two VLA Scholarships are Stephani Moore and Lauren Triola.

Stephani Moore has worked with the Massanutten Regional Library in Harrisonburg, VA since 2014. One of Stephani’s goals in obtaining her graduate degree is to “stay current in the latest developments related to technology and social networking in libraries… to assist patrons, less experienced in using that technology.” She has been active in VLA since 2015. Stephani is earning her MLIS degree from the University of Maryland-College Park.

Lauren Triola is from Fredericksburg, VA where she commutes to work for the Prince William Public Library in Dumfries. Her goal is to use cataloging to, “help make libraries and their collections continue to be accessible to everyone, especially to marginalized communities, who often are cut off from important educational resources.” Lauren is working toward her MLS from Clarion University of Pennsylvania.

VLA appreciates the support of this program. To learn more about the program, visit our Scholarships page. To make a tax-deductible donation to the Scholarship fund, please visit our donation page.

Choose Privacy Week & Free Webinar: Practical Privacy Practices

Last week, the House of Representatives joined the Senate and approved a resolution to remove online privacy rules adopted by the Federal Communications Commission. Once the President signs the bill, as he is expected to do, the new rules will allow internet service providers to collect and share user browsing history without requiring consent. Advocates for consumer privacy, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the Center for Democracy & Technology, have pushed back against the House and Senate resolution.

Practical Privacy Practices WebinarIf you are concerned about your own rights to online privacy, and those of your patrons, sign up to attend a free webinar on April 13, sponsored by American Library Association: Practical Privacy Practices. This webinar will highlight actions which libraries can take to protect patron privacy, including how to configure and manage your integrated library system (ILS), how to install free HTTPS certificates, and how to provide anonymous browsing options for your patrons. Speakers include Michael Robinson, chair of ALA's Intellectual Freedom Committee's Privacy Subcommittee (and head of the Consortium Library at the University of Alaska Anchorage); Marshall Breeding, consultant and expert on library technology systems; and Alison Macrina, librarian, internet activist and founder/director of the Library Freedom Project.

In response to many requests for information, ALA has published the following: https://chooseprivacyweek.org/how-libraries-can-respond-to-the-repeal-of-the-fcc-privacy-rules/

Did you also know about "Choose Privacy Week"? It's an awareness campaign supported by ALA to help patrons understand their own right to privacy in the digital age, similar to Banned Books Week?  ALA describes Choose Privacy Week as a campaign which "gives libraries the tools they need to educate and engage users, and gives citizens the resources to think critically and make more informed choices about their privacy." You can get programming ideas, resources, and more from the site.
