VLA Library License Plate Committee Seeking Members

VLA has a volunteer opportunity for you to serve on a subcommittee between now and July of 2017.

We intend, by the summer of 2017, to have a library license plate available for purchase via the VA DMV. In order to make this happen, VLA has a number of requirements we need to meet and we need your help!  This is a cross-functional team that will assist with marketing, promotion, record-keeping, design of the plate and other paperwork.

We must pre-sell 450 license plates in order to have a bill sponsored in the General Assembly during the 2017 session. Our goal is to exceed the 450 minimum by the time VLA’s Annual Conference happens in October. You WILL NOT need to be a VLA member to pre-purchase a library plate. We want to give you the tools you need to help reach out to your library customers, trustees, Friends, partners in education, you name it.

We’d like to have our team in place and ready to proceed with all the details by May 1. With that in mind, please email me by April 22 to let me know if you are interested in serving on this team. It will require monthly online meetings (less than 60 minutes each) and/or conference calls between May 2016 and next July. We do not anticipate any in-person meetings. (You do need to be a VLA member to serve on the team.)

As far as the design, we plan to integrate the National Library Logo as part of our artwork. We would like to have an online contest for people to suggest slogans, and the final slogan decision will be made by the License Plate Team and the VLA Executive Committee.  The DMV provides design guidelines, but if you have graphic design experience and want to help us create promotional materials that all libraries can use to encourage the pre-purchase, please consider joining us!

VLA will be working along with the Virginia Association of School Librarians (VAASL) to make the plate come to fruition. This plate is not a profit-sharing or revenue-generating venture. Our intention is to remind drivers in VA about libraries.

Visit the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles website for more information about sponsoring a license plate

Thank you for your interest and enthusiasm for this project!
