Deputy Director

Introduction

The Deputy Director assists the Library Director in the operation of the Library and oversees public services. The Deputy Director is expected to serve in a leadership role on the library's leadership team and will supervise Pamunkey Regional Library’s Public Service units. This position is supervised by the Library Director.

About This Role

The Deputy Director is responsible for the operation of the Public Service Branches, participating in the management of the library system, and special assignments and projects.

Minimum Requirements 

  • Extensive knowledge of professional library service
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage, supervise, instruct and evaluate individuals
  • Knowledge of computers and other electronic equipment
  • Ability to work in collaboration with a management team
  • Ability to work directly with the public in a friendly, helpful manner
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Visiting assigned units regularly
  • Assisting managers with the implementation of procedures and policies
  • Coordinating the work of the library
  • Developing new procedures and policies
  • Interviewing, hiring, instructing and evaluating managers
  • Instructing staff
  • Handling complaints, problems, concerns
  • Participating in professional organizations
  • Other duties as assigned

 Preferences

  • M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited library school preferred
  • Eligible for certification by Virginia Board for the Certification of Librarians preferred
  • Experience in library management and supervision required
  • Public library experience preferred
