City of Poquoson Youth Services Librarian
The Poquoson Public Library (PPL) seeks an outgoing, enthusiastic and creative full-time Youth Services Librarian with a strong public service philosophy and excellent communication skills to join its team. PPL is an award winning and vibrant one-branch library that serves the small coastal community of Poquoson, located in the larger metropolitan area of Hampton Roads, Virginia. This position performs advanced technical work planning, implementing and managing the operations of the children and young adult library services, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Library Director. Divisional supervision is exercised over three part-time Library Assistants.
Essential Functions: Working with the Director to develop youth services priorities and long/short term objectives in association with the strategic plan. Planning, developing, publicizing, implementing and supervising educational and recreational programming for youths ranging from newborns to teens. Training, assigning, supervising, and evaluating staff. Maintaining the youth collection through weeding and recommending new materials for purchase. Assisting parents and caregivers in developing early literacy skills and a lifelong love for reading. Providing reader’s advisory and compiling booklists and displays for various subjects. Serving as librarian liaison and performing cooperative outreach to promote reading in the community, schools, daycares and other areas. Researching and applying for and implementing grants for the library; soliciting funds and support from local businesses and organizations. Preparing and analyzing a variety of reports for the Library Director, City officials and the Library of Virginia. Performing notary and circulation duties as needed. The forty-hour work week includes one evening shift per week and one weekend shift (to include Saturday and Sunday) per month.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of modern library operation; thorough knowledge of the best in youth resources with the ability to introduce these materials to children and to interest them in the use of library resources; ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment and work well with children; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to proficiently operate a wide range of library technology; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons and associates. Experience in early literacy and STEM initiatives preferred.
Qualification Requirements: A Master’s Degree from an ALA accredited program with course work in Library Science, or equivalent, and moderate experience developing youth programs or working in an educational setting, or comparable combination of education and experience. Candidate must be able to obtain professional certification from the Commonwealth of Virginia Library Board within 6 months of hire.
Starting Salary: $56,560 plus an excellent benefits package.
