Performs professional work within the technical services department of the public library system. The ideal candidate will be skilled and open-minded to technology with an ability to question, troubleshoot, and find solutions; have experience working in a library environment providing a variety of support services to meet the changing technical needs of the modern library.
Essential Duties

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES of the Cataloging Librarian include the following:
- Cataloging and classification of all library materials in various formats, including media and electronic resources
- Manage and maintain the library’s catalog, ensuring accurate bibliographic records for all materials and supporting patrons in finding materials;
- Train and supervise all library staff on existing and new software applications.
- Serves as technology liaison between the library staff, the City IT department, and the TLC Partners Systems Administrator. Troubleshoot and resolve issues in-house whenever possible.
- Monitor existing license expirations and renewals for digital subscriptions;
- Communicate with library vendors, including TLC and OCLC, and work cooperatively with Library of Virginia staff on state-owned library subscriptions;
- Review and recommend new workflows as technologies change; work cooperatively with the Acquisitions clerk for logical and smooth transitions of materials.
- Establish and revise local serials holdings; maintain the Union List of Serials for the public library.
- Assists with processing of materials and repair operations of all materials;
- Analyze, interpret, and resolve system report information;
- Oversee tabulation of a variety of statistics using the digital and statistical reports modules provided by vendors
- Serve as an active member of the local TLC catalog user group; keep library directors informed of agreements that assure integrity of bibliographic data.
- Work in a team environment collaboratively with other library and City staff.
- Contribute and collaborate with library staff on programs and special projects when and if possible.
- Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Master's degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution required, coursework in cataloging or equivalent preferred. General knowledge of the principles and methods of modern library services, including automated systems, social media, and digital resources. Prior public library experience required. 3-5 years of experience with a variety of digital library systems required; Must be skilled with HTML and WordPress; experience with The Library Company (TLC) database preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Second language highly desirable. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. REASONING ABILITY Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS Solid interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution skills, required for working with citizens, vendors, and other City employees.

Other Requirements
Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
