The City of Virginia Beach Public Library has an exciting opportunity as a full time Grow Smart Coordinator/ Assistant Programming and Community Outreach Manager.  We are seeking a dynamic innovative, energetic, and creative professional who can plan, coordinate, facilitate and lead the actions and activities of Virginia Beach GrowSmart, the mission of which is to promote and improve the healthy development, school readiness, and early reading proficiency of young children, ages 0-8 years. Grow Smart Coordinator/Assistant Programming and Community Outreach Manager duties include but not limited to:

  • Responsible for leading the GrowSmart Team, a coalition of early education professionals who meet to advance GrowSmart's mission.
  • Responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating activities associated with the GrowSmart initiative, including but not limited to: leading GrowSmart Team members in strategic planning and alignment of initiatives with Library's strategies and initiatives; developing a comprehensive action plan based on the GrowSmart strategic plan; and identifying opportunities for enhanced community partnerships.
  • Oversee Growsmart staff and Programming and Community Outreach Lead Librarian, including hiring and performance evaluations.
  • Oversee operations of outreach arm of Programming and Community Outreach, including oversight of scheduling, partner communications, collaboration with branch outreach priorities, and generating ongoing reports. Assist with maintenance of VBPL Outreach Fleet and ensuring staff maintain vehicle training.
  • Serve as a member of the Programming and Community Outreach leadership team.
  • Collaborate with the Library Youth Services Coordinator to advocate, champion, and build coalitions for early childhood education, health, and development strategies.
  • Work to ensure division work is cross supported through all Programming and Community Outreach work units (youth, teen, adult, technology education, outreach, Growsmart) and aligned with the Library strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with Programming and Community Outreach Coordinators to plan, implement, and evaluate new programs and services.
  • Represent Programming and Community Outreach with Library Board, Friends of VBPL, Foundation, etc. when Programming and Community Outreach Manager is not available.
  • Co-create and help maintain a Programming and Community Outreach communication plan.
  • Stay informed about current trends, opportunities, and barriers to success of related early childhood education, the national Campaign for Grade-Level Reading Network. Seek advisement related to GrowSmart's activities and actions from the GrowSmart Policy Board, and ensure the Board is kept updated and informed about factors impacting early childhood education in the city.
  • Promote public awareness and engagement to create community understanding of, involvement in, and support for high-quality early childhood education, health, and development.
  • Align and embed GrowSmart programs and activities to the Library's strategy; the City of Virginia Beach Strategic Plan; City Council goals and priorities.
  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.

Special Requirements: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Pay range: $67,264.00 - $104,260.00
