GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: FLSA Status: Exempt

Specific Job Duties:  Responsible for running the library’s non-fiction book club and works with other librarians on staff to maintain and oversee the library’s Virginiana Room and collection.

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:                                                                                                                                        

Performs intermediate technical work assisting patrons and providing reference services; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision is exercised over subordinate library personnel and volunteers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Provides reference and readers' advisory services to library patrons; assists patrons with use of public computers, photocopiers,  and other library equipment, plans and implements library programs; maintains records; prepares reports; weeds collections.

  • Staffs reference desk; conducts reference interviews and answers reference questions in person, by telephone and email; uses integrated library system, reference books, Internet, and various electronic resources to find information; provides reader advisory services
  • Acts as senior staff member as required; opens and closes facility
  • Instructs and assists patrons in use of library applications and library account, print materials, public use computers, photocopier, microfilm machines and other library equipment
  • Checks integrated library system and/or OCLC WorldCat for requested materials; places patron holds; takes interlibrary loan requests, verifies bibliographic information and forwards to appropriate person; notifies patrons of material's availability
  • Prepares and presents a variety of programs for children, teens and/or adult patrons, including book clubs and special events
  • Develops bibliographies on various subjects
  • Assists with training and overseeing volunteers
  • Conducts collections inventory; reads and maintains reference collection
  • Oversees Virginiana collection in coordination with collection services manager
  • Accepts patron recommendations for collection development; assists in collection development planning; assists with weeding various collections
  • Troubleshoots technical problems on staff and public computers, photocopiers, microfilm machines and other library equipment
  • Maintains reference transactions statistical sheets; enters statistical information into spreadsheets for reporting
  • Verifies identification and assigns Internet guest passes as needed
  • Proctors exams
  • Maintains county government documents
  • Orders and maintains tax forms
  • Opens and closes facility
  • Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of modern library operation; thorough knowledge of reader interest levels; thorough knowledge of library reference, adult, teen and other library services; thorough knowledge of library system computer applications; thorough knowledge of library reference materials and research techniques; ability to maintain accurate records and statistics and complete accurate reports; ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment; ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons, associates and the general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Master's in library science is preferred and some professional library experience. Equivalent education and experience may be considered.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of Professional Librarian certificate issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
