Librarian III –Youth Services Manager

FULL-TIME / 40 HOURS PER WEEK

The Youth Services Manager is responsible for operations of the Beatley Library’s Youth Services Team and coordinates Youth Services Programs system wide. This position also works with other City departments to lead programs and initiatives such as All Alexandria Reads and 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten.

General Duties:

· Leads the Beatley Youth Services Department. Develops and implements departmental goals, directs and evaluates programming and services for children and youth ages 0-18.

· Supervises and schedules the Teen Coordinator, two full-time Youth Services Librarians, and one part-time Library Assistant II. Oversees the supervision of three Page positions.

· Plans and implements educational programs and literacy initiatives for children ages 0-12.

· Leads Alexandria Library’s Youth Services team in coordinating system-wide events such as Summer and Winter Reading and One Thousand Books Before Kindergarten.

· Works with the Beatley Branch Manager and Library Administration to represent Library Youth Services on committees and in meetings.

· Writes funding requests and reports for Youth Services programming initiatives. Manages program budgets and works with the Library Finance department to request payments for vendors and performers.

· Coordinates collection development and maintenance for children’s materials.

· Helps staff the Youth Services desk and assists children, caregivers, parents, teachers, and other patrons with requests for information and library materials.

· Works with the Library Outreach Department to form meaningful partnerships with organizations throughout the City and coordinate outreach activities with Alexandria City Public Schools, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, and related organizations providing services to youth and families in the community.

· Represents the Library on youth and family-oriented City committees and workgroups.

· Stays aware of professional trends and continually works to evaluate and improve youth programming and services.

· Functions as building officer in the Branch Manager’s absence.

Skills and Abilities:

· Comprehensive knowledge of children’s and young adult literature, programming and services

· Management and supervisory skills, including hiring and onboarding, staff evaluation, team building, time management, and planning

· Excellent communication and customer service skills

· Knowledge of integrated library systems and technology

· Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing library environment

· Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff

· Ability to work independently as well as part of a team

· Prior supervisory experience is required

Minimum Requirements:

Master's Degree in Library & Information Science from an ALA-accredited school; at least five years of experience in professional library work, including two or more years of experience in a supervisory capacity at the level of Librarian II or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Applicant must possess or obtain, within 3 months of hire, a license to practice as a registered professional librarian issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Salary: $72,602.14- 121,682.08 Annually

Schedule: Hours are scheduled to meet the staffing needs of the Beatley Central Library, and will include days, evenings and Saturdays.
