Collection Development/Cataloging Librarian

Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is a nonresidential two-year institution of higher education that serves Central Virginia – principally residents of the City of Charlottesville and the counties of Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa and Nelson. POSITION: Collection Development/Cataloging Librarian
CLASSIFICATION: Professional Faculty, 12 months, Full Time
DIVISION/OFFICE: Library
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Director of Library and Academic Support

DUTIES: Performs original and copy cataloging based on current standards, batch loads e-book records, and collaborates with the access services librarian to maintain the online catalog. Conducts collection development with a particular focus on books, both print and electronic. Purchases all library materials and supplies. Participates in library, college, consortium, and regional/national activities as appropriate. Contributes to the College’s and library’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. This position works primarily from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend and evening work possible, and is not teleworking eligible.

  • Performs original and copy cataloging of all library materials to facilitate their identification, access, and use.
  • Maintains professional cataloging standards, including monitoring and staying current with OCLC, USMARC, RDA, LCSH, and AACR2.
  • Proofreads published catalog records to ensure adherence to standard practices, and edits and updates existing catalog records to improve access.
  • Maintains and assesses the collection, including long-term space planning, removal of print materials, and creating policies and procedures governing the print collection.
  • Recommends collection materials to the director of library and academic support.
  • Purchases all library materials following state purchasing guidelines.
  • Maintains library financial records, assists the director of library and academic support with budgeting, and keeps accurate collection statistics.
  • Oversees periodical subscriptions and maintenance of the periodical collection.
  • Conducts the opening procedures to ensure the space is prepared when the library opens at 8 a.m.
  • Supervises the collection of materials for the college’s institutional repository, uploads files, and manages the metadata for archival records.
  • Assists students, faculty, and staff with reference, library research, and information literacy skills.
  • Serves as an embedded librarian in class sections as assigned by the instruction services librarian.
  • Teaches library instruction classes as needed.
  • Trains and supervises one part-time employee.
  • Develops, reviews, and updates library policies in consultation with the director of library and academic support.
  • Works collaboratively with other library personnel to accomplish strategic goals.
  • Participates in professional development activities.
  • Serves on college-wide teams and committees as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the director of library and academic support.

KSA's/Required Qualifications         

  • Master’s degree in library science or library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Superior customer skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Detail oriented and persistent
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and work well under pressure, independently, and in a team-oriented environment
  • Ability to adapt to changing and evolving library procedures, priorities, and information technologies
  • Ability to perform original or copy cataloging
  • Experience with collection development and analysis
  • Ability to provide assistance to students, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to teach information literacy skills

Additional Considerations                 

  • Working knowledge of RDA, MARC bibliographic and authority records, LCSH, and LC Classification.
  • Experience with ExLibris’ Alma, OCLC Connexion, YBP/GOBI, and eVA.
  • Experience in a community college environment and commitment to the community college mission.
