Danville Community College developed from two institutions, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute opened in 1936 as Danville Textile School, becoming Danville Technical Institute just after World War II. The Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute first began as an engineering division in 1946 and was later expanded to include the first two years of course work for all engineering, business administration, liberal arts, and science majors. Beginning in the summer of 1966, all programs taught by Danville Technical Institute were brought under the Virginia Department of Community Colleges. Effective July 1, 1968, the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute merged with the existing community college providing the comprehensive programs now offered. Job Description: The Dean of Arts, Sciences, and Business at Danville Community College spearheads the implementation of the College’s academic mission by supervising divisional administrative staff, supporting and supervising faculty, and overseeing curricular changes in the division. Serving as a liaison between the College’s academic departments and the Office of Academic Affairs and Student Services, the Dean ensures effective communication and advocacy. Additionally, the Dean provides robust operational management and academic leadership for a designated selection of disciplines and related instructional programs within the academic division. Collaborating with the college community, the Dean enhances the quality of the teaching and learning environment, fostering holistic student development. Reporting to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Services, the Dean is a key member of the Vice President’s leadership team and the College Management group, working collectively to advance the college in alignment with its vision, mission, core values, and strategic goals. JOB DUTIES:
- Promoting and maintaining excellence in teaching and learning for divisional courses and programs.
- Supervising and supporting faculty and staff assigned to the division, including recruitment, evaluation, and professional development.
- Ensuring College programs comply with administrative policies and accreditation standards, and leading initiatives in accreditation opportunities and requirements.
- Guiding and participating in curriculum planning and development, ensuring programs are current, relevant, and innovative.
- Supervising the assessment processes of academic programs, ensuring Student Learning Outcomes through ongoing assessment, and using assessment data for program improvement.
- Implementing and overseeing College and Departmental budgets, including approving purchase orders, travel, and development expenses, while directing and maintaining a sound budget, and providing budget needs to the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Services.
- Working collaboratively with academic and student services colleagues to achieve college-wide consistency and coordination in the delivery of programs and services.
- Develop and advance applicable standards, policies, and procedures to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the division.
- Overseeing the integration of technology in teaching and learning, ensuring faculty and staff are trained in new technologies.
- Developing strategies to enhance student engagement, retention, and completion within the division.
- Encouraging and supporting faculty research, scholarship, and creative activities.
- Building and maintaining relationships with alumni to support the division’s programs and initiatives.
- Promoting the College and its programs, representing the College in community or professional events and affiliations.
- Organizing and working with advisory committees, facilitating active relationships with business and industry leaders.
- Initiating special projects and courses, determining course offerings, and assigning course instructors with program managers and faculty.
- Delegating responsibilities to other staff members in the division, directing the staff in establishing goals and objectives.
- Ensuring programs are up-to-date through adequate use of instructional material and effective, innovative instructional techniques.
- Supporting program managers in developing a program for the proper inventory and maintenance of equipment, ensuring implementation of college safety standards for the division.
- Evaluating faculty.
- Assisting the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Services in handling pertinent administrative and personnel activities, and participating in shared governance by serving on committees within the College.
- Other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Academic Affairs & Student Services, and college President.
Required Qualifications:
- A Master’s degree from an accredited institution is required, along with demonstrated success in project development and management. The candidate must show a commitment to the goals and ideals of higher education and the value of the division. Additionally, the ability to collaborate with diverse constituencies is essential.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
- Demonstrated understanding of DEI principles, with the ability to effectively communicate best practices and initiatives.
- Ability to project a knowledgeable and supportive presence to clients, candidates, students, and colleagues.
- Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a high-performing team. · Commitment to providing the highest level of service, with strong attention to detail and prioritization skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with the ability to create professional presentations and reports.
- Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, and highly visible environment.
- Excellent judgment and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write concisely, persuasively, and summarize information effectively.
- Familiarity with Student Information Systems.
- Strong analytical abilities to conduct thorough analysis and develop well-founded recommendations.
- Knowledge of best practices in developing career pathway programs for secondary students, including dual enrollment and non-credit options.
- Ability to provide administrative leadership in a college culture that values consultation and participatory governance.
- Demonstrated ability to develop creative and innovative solutions.

Additional Considerations:
- Doctoral degree in Higher Education, Education, Counseling, Humanities, Mathematics, Sciences or other related degree from an accredited institution
- 5 years or more of college-level leadership, supervisory, fiscal, and administrative experience at a director level or higher.
- Experience with developing and administering programs in a broad range of academic disciplines, along with knowledge of relevant certification programs and standards.
- The candidate should have experience working with government agencies, community organizations.
- Classroom teaching experience at the post-secondary level in an academic discipline is essential.
- The candidate should have experience overseeing and managing federal and state funding for academic programs.
