POSITION: Evening Circulation Support and Training Developer
LOCATION: University of Virginia Library, Charlottesville, VA

The University of Virginia Library is seeking applicants for an Evening Circulation Support and Training Developer position in the Department of Information Services and Spaces. Based in the Brown Science and Engineering Library, this position will perform a wide range of complex duties related to developing programs and materials for the initial and ongoing training (by circulation student supervisors) of 125+ Circulation Student Employees. This position will also provide a bridge for student management between daytime and nighttime staff, as well as providing scheduled and emergency backup coverage for circulation student supervisors at various locations. 

 The Evening Circulation & Training Specialist will work an alternative work schedule from Tuesday through Saturday (11:00am – 7:00pm on weekdays and 9:00am – 5:00pm on Saturdays) and help the department cover evening hours during the Fall and Spring semesters. Work shifts change during the summer months, and during school break periods, in accordance with the academic calendar.   

Duties:

  • This position will be responsible for creating and maintaining a Circulation Student Employee training program with supporting materials.
  • The program and materials will be used by circulation student supervisors at five Service and Information Desks to train their student employees.
  • The academic schedule hampers traditional training methods and schedules. This position will collaborate with circulation student supervisors to develop ways to integrate training materials to fit the specific needs and schedules of each Service and Information Desk.
  • This position will consult circulation student supervisors and their annual assessment cycle of Circulation Student Employees to create ways of utilizing training materials to address areas of student performance that need improvement. 
  • Other responsibilities may include creation, editing, and updating of Service and Information Desk Manuals and FAQs as well as writing and editing policies and procedures. 
  • As a backup for circulation student supervisors, this position provides critical management coverage for public-facing service points.   

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of library or equivalent experience. 6 years of library or related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Proficiency in computer applications with working knowledge of various databases and software programs.  
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a service-oriented environment. 
  • Familiarity with academic or public library services and systems.  
  • Excellent customer service skills  
  • Strong interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills. 
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail  
  • Physical ability to safely and independently bend and reach overhead, to grasp and move library materials, to move and unpack packages and bins (up to 40 pounds), and to push loaded book trucks. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience providing circulation, reference service and/or library instruction in an academic library. 
  • Experience developing and documenting training programs. 
  • Experience training staff or student workers. 
  • Demonstrated successful experience supervising students.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $49,000 - $53,000
