Job Description

Classification:                        Full -Time,

Primary Location:                 Youth Services Coordinators will be assigned to a primary County. (YSC will work at branch libraries and community locations depending on programming needs in the county assigned. May be requested to assist at other regional libraries as needed.)

Reports to:                            Branch Manager

Wages:                                    Based on and hourly rate; $14.75 / hr.

Hours:                                     40 hours /week

Schedule:                               Hours may vary according to programming and community functions. May include nights, weekends, early mornings, and attendance at scheduled programs is required.

Supervises:                             May supervise staff and volunteers as assigned.

Position Status:                     FLSA non-exempt

 

Summary Of Duties

Youth Services Coordinator’s responsibility includes planning and managing programming (ages birth - 5 and grades K- 6th), developing viable programming and collection development for Juvenile and Young Adults. Recording Statistics and managing assigned budget areas.

Primary Duties

  • A public and visible face of the Children’s Library services both within the library and outside in the community.
  • Responsible for program development and implementation for stated age groups and their caregivers.
  • Responsible for maintaining a vibrant and engaging children’s and Young Adult circulation collection.
  • Works with regional counter parts as part of a Regional Children and Youth Services team
  • Responsible for preparing marketing information related to children and youth services in print or for social media and working with the Public Relations staff person.
  • Able to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Provides excellent customer services to our youngest library users, tweens, teens, and their caregivers Maintains strong relationships with Schools, various local organizations and individuals to provide outstanding outreach to the community.
  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory services to children, caregivers, and educators in the community.
  • Participates in the collection development of print, electronic materials, and other circulating items.
  • Keeps up to date on children’s issues and development in the library profession and education through study, reading and by attending appropriate workshops and training sessions.
  • Interprets library rules, policies, and procedures, as needed for library patrons.
  • Collect, record, and interpret statistical data.
  • Create reports as needed for the Regional Library Director, Board of Trustees and as requested for Friends Groups
  • Follow and manage budget categories related to children's programs, supplies and materials.
  • Works with Friends Group on developing a Children’s Services budget annually or semiannually depending on the needs of the Friends Group. 
  • Work as a productive member of a team creating a positive and welcoming environment for library patrons.
  • Requires ability to work a flexible schedule.
  • A reliable means of transportation is required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

General Requirements:

Work is performed primarily in a library environment. Working with the public daily. Position requires excellent customer service, oral and written skills.

The person in these positions requires strong computer skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The YSCs will often need to provide computer support for library users and should be familiar with Windows and MAC operating systems, iOS, Android, and Chrome devices.

Consistent, personalized customer service that follows library policy is a priority. The YSC must be able to maintain a calm, professional demeanor when dealing with stressful situations.

Manual dexterity and physical ability to reach and shelve library materials, sort books, use software and a variety of media formats at a variety of heights is required. Sufficient vision, hearing and speech are essential to communicate with patrons and to assist them in locating materials, using computers or other office equipment. Must have sufficient hand eye coordination and manual dexterity to operate a personal computer and keyboard, telephone, and other office equipment. Physical exertion may be required to lift library materials and other supplies from overhead and from the floor. Must have the

ability to move around the library. This position may require movement, standing or sitting for long periods of time.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent work experience
  • Experience in developing programs.
  • Good oral and written skills.
  • Experienced and comfortable with public speaking

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field (Library Science or Early Childhood Development or Elementary or Secondary Education) or equivalent work experience.
  • Two years' experience in a library environment. Including working in youth services or equivalent work experience working with youth.
  • Knowledge of children's and young adult reading materials and authors.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage, organize, and present work/information effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community members and staff.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to exercise sound, independent judgment and handle a variety of customer services issues tactfully.
  • Skilled in oral, written, and interpersonal communication
