Branch Managers - Multiple Locations

Prince George's County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS) is looking for outstanding Branch Managers to oversee daily operations of a library branch and manage staff in supervisory line.

  • Essential Duties: Oversee daily operations of the library branch (projects and initiatives, branch procedures, administrative tasks, Sunday Service, computer lab, special collections, etc.); Supervise library branch staff; monitor and evaluate job performance; oversee staff training and development, as needed; Collaborate with Talent and Culture on the issues of hiring, discharge, suspension, disciplinary action, performance evaluations, and the grievance process; Provide reference, reader’s advisory, and computer assistance to library customers and provide instruction on the use of library catalog and databases; Oversee library information/circulation services desk; Initiate and maintain community contacts and represent the Library in the community; Promote library services and collections to library customers; Oversee programming for library customers, as needed; Establish customer service priorities and coordinate services and activities in response to these priorities; Oversee security guard procedures and practices; Report and follow up on building maintenance issues; Substitute in other branches; Perform other duties as assigned.  
  • Qualifications: Master of Library Science degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program; Three to five years of professional library experience including three years of supervisory experience; Maryland Professional Public Librarian certificate within six-months of hire; Knowledge of supervisory principles, practices, and methods; Knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of public library services, customer service, technology, information services, adult services, youth services, as assigned; Considerable knowledge of literature, reference and information materials, publishers, and periodicals required. Strong written and verbal communication as well as customer service skills; Excellent organization, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills; Experience working in a labor/management environment highly preferred; Bilingual skills are a plus.

Librarian or Specialist, Workforce Development
Prince George's County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS) is seeking a dynamic and knowledgeable workforce development professional to serve as Librarian or Public Services Specialist.

  • Essential Duties: Oversee the operations of the Workforce Development Life Lab; Plan and implement workforce development programs and services including job readiness coaching/mentoring, resume preparation and interview techniques, education and training; and career development; Conduct outreach and serve as a point of contact for workforce development initiatives; Liaise with stakeholders at Employ Prince George’s and other community organizations; Train new staff and volunteers on Life Lab technologies and best practices; Provide reference, reader’s advisory, and computer assistance to library customers; Provide instruction on the use of library catalog and electronic resources; Participate in the maintenance and development of the library collection; Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Public Services Specialist: Bachelor's degree; three years of professional library experience or workforce development experience; completion of Library Associate Training Institute (LATI) within two years of hire date; and ability to maintain eligibility by completing 90 hours of training every five years.
  • Librarian: Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution; one to three years of professional library experience or workforce development experience; ability to secure certification as a Professional Public Librarian in the State of Maryland within six months of hire date and meet recertification requirements every five years.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Bilingual English and Spanish, strongly preferred; Considerable knowledge of literature, reference and information materials, publishers, and periodicals, especially resources pertaining to workforce and career development; Knowledge of public library reference tools, including web and online resource searching, especially resources pertaining to workforce and career development; Excellent oral and written communication and customer service skills; Strong attention to detail and collaborative problem solving skills; A high level of professionalism and reliability; Ability to prioritize work and remain highly organized, especially given competing priorities; Proficient with Google Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Trello, electronic databases, e-mail, smartphones and tablets, internet navigation and other office equipment.

Communications Specialist, Bilingual in English and Spanish
Prince George's County Memorial Library System (PGCMLS) has an exciting opportunity for a Communications Specialist who will be responsible for all English and Spanish, internal and external library communications including media relations, communications writing, government relations, public information officer duties, social media, and contributing to major marketing campaigns.

  • Essential Duties: Serve as the Library’s primary media relations contact for pitching stories, responding to interview requests, publishing media releases, and issuing emergency operations notices (internally and externally); Coordinate the Library’s media relations strategy with all appropriate stakeholders; Serve as the Library’s primary English and Spanish communications writer and copy editor for all media releases, scripts, formal remarks/talking points for stakeholders, reports, public email communications, grant reports, advocacy/government relations, employee announcements via the staff intranet, and the Library’s website; Support PGCMLS Foundation with communications-related projects and other needs; Staff media or Library principals at select Library or community events during the business day and/or after hours as needed.
  • Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, English, Creative Writing, or a related field required; Master’s degree or commensurate experience in a related field preferred; Bilingual in English and Spanish required, with strong written and verbal professional communication skills; Three or more years of experience coordinating media relations for an institution or business; Three or more years of experience working with executives in a public, private, or nonprofit setting; Strong public speaking skills and ability to serve as an institutional spokesperson in English and Spanish.
