General Definition of Work
Performs complex skilled information and public service work with an emphasis on the use and development of online information resources for teaching, learning, marketing, and outreach. Provides library reference assistance using print and digital resources; provides detailed technology assistance on a wide variety of platforms (PCs, scanners, mobile devices, etc); plans and conducts successful programs both in the library and as outreach; markets the library and its resources and programs via appropriate methods, and related work as need or assigned. Work is performed under the direction and supervision of the Library Director.

Essential Functions
Patron services: Performs detailed customer service, library database, and integrated library system tasks including checking out and in of library materials; research subjects, titles, and authors for patrons; communicates with and guides library patrons to locate and retrieve library materials (both in-library and online). Creates, maintains, and troubleshoots library user accounts; accepts payment for fines, interlibrary loans, supplies, faxes, and copies/prints. Performs detailed reference interviews and answers reference questions. Applies effective techniques to address difficult situations with patrons and resolve conflicts with patron accounts and behaviors; serves as in-charge staff member with authority to resolve basic issues in lieu of Library Director.
Marketing: Develops and maintains knowledge of and promotes library programs, collections, technologies, and services to users both internal and external. Responsible for the marketing (online, print, outreach) of library services and resources. Manages the library’s tourism center.
Collection development: Performs collection development under the supervision of the Collection Management Senior Librarian for assigned subject areas, including selection, weeding, and stacks maintenance. Manages the library’s digital resources collections (ebooks, databases, etc.) Manages the library’s periodicals collection (digital and print). Assists in the development of the library’s Collection Development policy.
Library management: Assists in development of strategic plans for both short-term and long-term planning; assists in development of library policies and procedures; serves on Roanoke Valley Libraries consortium committees as assigned by the Library Director.
Professional Development: Engages in self-directed and assigned professional development opportunities to increase knowledge and skill level in assigned responsibilities including webinars, conferences, and the reading of scholarly journals.
Routine work: Assists in regular maintenance of library cash register reports and deposits. Assists in the collection, recording, and analyzation of library statistics.

Qualification Requirements
General knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of modern library operation; general knowledge of reader interest levels; general knowledge of library reference, adult services, and children's services; general knowledge of library reference materials and research techniques; general knowledge of the library circulation functions; skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment; ability to maintain accurate records and statistics and complete accurate reports; ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other library staff, library patrons, associates, and the general public.

Education and Experience
Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program, or related field and moderate experience working in a library and/or customer service, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements
