The Chesapeake Public Library (CPL) has a well-established history of providing Youth and Family services and would like you to join our team as an outgoing, enthusiastic, and detail-oriented full-time Librarian II to help us deliver new and innovative programming and events while providing exemplary customer service to support the mission of the Youth and Family services department.

The Librarian II responsibilities include managing the Youth and Family Services department, hiring and evaluating employees, creating and providing literacy and STEM/STEAM programming, assisting and instructing customers in finding print and electronic materials, providing homework and research support, providing computer assistance, delivering high quality programming to schools and community locations, promoting CPL services and programs using approved social media and publicity tools, supervising volunteers, maintaining the branch children’s and teen’s collections, and participating in CPL system-wide committees. Will assist in other public service areas when needed.

Preferred qualifications

Public library experience in youth and family services preferred with other library experience considered.


Requires an American Library Association accredited master’s degree in Library Science.



Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record in compliance with the City Driving Standards. Virginia Public Librarian Certificate required within three months of employment.


In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standard, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience, including some supervisory experience. Public library experience preferred with other library experience considered.

SPECIAL Instructions to Applicants:

Exemplary customer service skills and experience, along with the ability to multitask. The scheduled hours will include day, evening, and weekend hours primarily at Indian River Library. May also include after-hours special programming.

Varied hours: Monday – Thursday 8:00 am – 7:15 pm, Friday – Saturday 8:00 am – 5:15 pm, Sunday 10:00 am – 5:15 pm.

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or city wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.

The selected candidate may be transferred to work at another area library if and when a need arises.

An acceptable criminal history and Child Protective Services (CPS) reports are required.

An in-basket exercise will be administered to candidates that are selected for an interview.
