The Assistant Library Director position supports the Library system and the Library Director in overall operation and planning of the Lynchburg Public Library System. Duties include: staffing, collection, services and programming, public relations, facilities, and budget. The Assistant Library Director position is responsible for the supervision and evaluation of Branch Library Managers. The position will include an emphasis on staff training and coaching, as well as coordinating special projects and outreach initiatives for the Library system. The successful candidate will be an inspiring and effective leader, focused on customer service and community engagement; be a team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills; and stay aware of emerging trends and best practices in public library services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
  • Assists the Library Director in the management of daily library operations within the framework of the City of Lynchburg policies, procedures, and budget.
  • Brings a high level of customer service experience and skills to create a library environment that is welcoming to the public and fellow employees.
  • Handles complaints, problems, and concerns.
  • Directly supervises Branch managers, assists with hiring and training of Branch employees, and regularly visits the Branch locations.
  • Visits and works on site at Branch Library locations on a frequent basis.
  • Coordinates overall library outreach goals and works with different library departments and Branch managers to initiate various outreach services in the community.
  • Regularly assists and acts as back-up for shifts on public services desks in various departments and Branches.
  • Participates in library employee committees and meetings, such as the Social Media Team, and initiates new committees as needed.
  • Participates in City committees, meetings, and volunteer opportunities.
  • Conducts special projects as requested by Library Director.
  • Assists the Library Director with the preparation and submission of the annual budget and other local, state, and federal surveys and reports.
  • Collaborates on the development and implementation of library policies and procedures, as well at the library’s strategic plan and capital improvement projects.
  • Seeks appropriate grant and funding opportunities to supplement the library budget.
  • Attends various professional meetings, conferences, workshops and classes at the discretion of the Library Director, with an emphasis on Virginia Library Association meetings.
  • Acts as Director in the Library Director’s absence.

Additional duties and responsibilities, as assigned, may include the following:

  •     Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to businesses and citizens may be assigned.
  •     When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution required. Requires a minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible library experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess effective supervisory skills and have experience in the operational and administrative oversight of a public library.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  •     Possession of valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record according to City criteria.
  •     Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training wihtin 90 days of employment.  May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
