DESCRIPTION:
The City of Norfolk's Department of Libraries is currently seeking an experienced Children's Programming & Outreach- Librarian I for Youth Services. The candidate will be responsible for providing assistance to patrons in answering questions, locating information and interpreting resources through manual and automated sources. Assists with collection and program development. Also catalogs and classifies library materials. Provides library tours and conducts instruction classes.

Departmental Hiring Salary: $42,870.00

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Plans and promotes programs for youth and tweens for the library system
  • Supervises YS employees, interns, and volunteers
  • Writes reports and Program Plans for Youth Services Department and submits monthly reports
  • Conducts training of new youth employees, library staff and contractual workers
  • Provides coverage for early literacy, literary/cultural and YOUmedia programs at branches
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Maintains statistics, program records and community events
  • Assist with the staff interview process and make hiring recommendations for programming personnel
  • Develop and maintain onboarding document for new employees
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office – WORD, EXCEL, PowerPoint
  • Assists with special programs, events, festivals and fairs
  • Acquires equipment, books and materials for systemwide programming projects
  • Assist in building and maintaining the library’s juvenile collection
  • Coordinates and manages calendars for departments
  • Creates promotional materials such as flyers and posters
  • Performs administrative duties by preparing and analyzing statistical reports
  • Research grants and writes grant applications
  • Attend outreach activities and community events
  • Participates on committees and attends training related to the job
  • Promotes the Family Place Project

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Work requires specialized knowledge in a professional or technical field. Work requires professional level of knowledge of a discipline which is acquired in a Masters degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university.

Three (3) years of experience in a field related to coordinating programs. Experience in compiling data, writing reports, and developing procedures. Experience in conducting training sessions,supervising employees and tracking budgets. Work requires the ability to write performance plans, work plans, and monthly reports.

Advanced technology skill set preferred.

Work Location:

Work Hours:
40 hours/week, 9:00 am -5:30 pm. Monday-Friday or Saturday-Thursday, depending on programs and events in the calendar.

Signing Bonus:
This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus.
