JOB DESCRIPTION
Libraries are about creating individualized, equal, and equitable access to resources. Every library patron has a unique need, and not everyone has the resources to meet that need. As a library, we build a rapport with the unique individual we are serving to determine what their need is, and we connect the individual with the appropriate resources, people, organizations, and/or technology to meet that need.

The Adult Services Librarian achieves this goal by ensuring front-line library staff have the tools, resources, and support to build relationships with new adults, adults, and seniors, support spaces that meet the needs of the community, and provide direction and implementation of programming for all adults 18 and over..  

The Adult Services Librarian performs difficult professional work in the public library system; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Adult Services Manager.

The Adult Services Librarian oversees the following areas of library operations:

Public Services Responsibilities

  • Maintains customer service quality, provides feedback and training when necessary
  • Has knowledge of and interprets the library system’s policies and procedures for library patrons, volunteers, and staff
  • Instructs patrons in the use of library facilities and equipment
  • Provides in-depth reference and reader’s advisory services
  • Circulates materials
  • Plans and implements programming for a wide range of audiences, including adults, seniors and, caregivers, in house, at other Augusta County Library locations, and in an outreach capacity
  • Provides staff support for promoting programming, services, and collections

Staff Coordination

  • With direction from the library’s strategic plan and Adult Services Manager, oversees and provides guidance to all staff who are responsible for providing programming for adults, seniors and their caregivers at the Fishersville Main Library Branch
  • Meets regularly with programming staff to provide feedback and assistance with any projects
  • Provides feedback to supervisors regarding staff performance
  • Ensures staff have supplies and equipment to carry out their daily responsibilities

Adult Spaces

  • Monitors condition of library equipment; coordinates with the Adult Services Manager to plan for replacements/upgrades
  • Notifies administrative staff of condition of and problems with adult areas
  • Manages display spaces

Collection Management

  • Coordinates with the Adult Services Manager to supervise weeding and physical collection projects
  • Reviews, selects, and catalogs A/V materials for all ACL locations
  • Provides recommendations for shelving location, findability of the collection, and displays

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Assists with the writing of  bi-monthly board reports
  • Maintains programming supplies
  • Prepares statistical reports and analysis regarding services, programming, and usage
  • Attends monthly managers meetings
  • Serves as project manager
  • May serve on hiring committees

System-wide Responsibilities: Outreach Coordinator
The Outreach Coordinator achieves Augusta County Library’s goals by identifying organizations whose mission and work intersects with the strategic priorities of the library and builds and maintains relationships with those organizations. This position will coordinate offsite library services to provide access throughout the county, with a focus on underserved communities.

The Outreach Coordinator oversees the following areas of library operations:

  • Identifies organizations whose mission and work intersect with the strategic priorities of Augusta County Library
  • Maintains a partner database with points of contact and potential collaborative projects
  • Prioritizes organizations that serve underserved populations and works toward providing offsite services to those populations
  • Identifies innovative services to meet the needs of community members, outside the physical library
  • Serves as the liaison between the Adult Services Manager, Youth Services Manager and partnering organizations on coordinating offsite programming
  • Provides feedback to executive leadership after learning of opportunities that will inform service, collection, or program development
  • Coordinates with the PR/Marketing Specialist to spread the word about library services and upcoming events by regularly communicating with partnered organizations
  • Collaborates with Valley Libraries for regional outreach opportunities
  • Works alongside the Assistant Director, Branch, and Station Managers, and outreach co-lead to schedule outreach events without placing a strain on service point coverage
  • Identifies outreach capacity based on available staff and outreach needs
  • Trains all staff on outreach procedures and services

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, procedures, materials and practices; thorough knowledge of reader interest levels and good knowledge of books and authors relevant to the assigned area; ability to evaluate library programs and services, design and implement new systems or improvements; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and library patrons; ability to establish and maintain favorable public relations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited Master’s program in library science from an ALA-accredited library school and considerable experience working in a public library.

HOURS
40 Hours/ Week; This is an exempt position
Nights and weekends

SALARY/BENEFITS
Starting salary is $40,321 with an excellent benefits package including retirement, group life & health insurance and paid leave.
