Hours:    40 hrs. Per week; may include nights and weekends
Compensation:    $13.00/ hour

Wythe-Grayson Regional Library is comprised of 5 public libraries across 2 counties. The libraries are located in beautiful Southwest Virginia. WGRL is looking to hire a Programmer for our Wythe County Public Library (50/60% time) and System wide program development (40/50%). The successful candidate will be a responsible, creative, enthusiastic individual, bring passion for providing excellent, innovative library programs and a commitment to guide, inform and reimagine the library’s impact on future generations of Wythe and Grayson County youth.

Library Programming Specialist is responsible for taking the lead in coordinating, planning, implementing programming that is educational, entertaining and enriching for our youngest library users through young adults and evaluation of all youth programs and services. Programs and events may be physically at a library; or at community locations (outreach services). The Library Programmer will be expected to creatively assist Branch Managers in the development of adult programming.

Duties Include:

  • Develop and implement children and youth library programs (birth to 18 yrs.); participate and attend meetings relevant to programming and library services; continuing education; evaluate and adapt state wide initiatives to WGRL resources and needs; and assists youth and parents with researching or locating routine to difficult reference information.
  • Works with Youth Services Coordinator (Grayson County) to develop a cohesive program across the 5 library system. Works with both Branch Managers to facilitate a sustainable and vibrant adult program. Work with schools and community organizations to provide outreach to children and young adults. Collect data and evaluate the effectiveness of programs across the system.
  • Coordinate programs on a variety of topics, such as early literacy, arts and crafts, STEM/STEAM, current events, and a variety of other literacy topics relevant for youth and their caregivers.
  • Make recommendation of supplies and technology. Selects and oversees collection development of children’s and young adult collection in all formats.
  • Reviews financial data for library programs and supplies; identifies opportunities to improve service delivery.

The position is supervised by the Regional Director. Time will be split between Regional programming and Youth Services at Wythe County Public Library.

Ability to lift books and other materials and move heavy book carts. Some bending and stooping required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 18 years old.
  • Reliable means of transportation and have a valid driver’s license
  • Strong computer skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Relevant experience including planning and presenting programs, events or equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience that will provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Experience in working with children and young adults (2 - 18 years old).
  • Pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Program development, planning, implementation and presentation skills
  • Library experience (3 years) in related areas of youth services service.

Education Requirements
Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in related discipline

  • Equivalent work related experience in program development and implantation will be considered

Preferred: Masters in Library Science (MLS, MLIS, MSIS) from an ALA accredited program
