Electronic Resources Librarian - 502273

Reporting to the Head of Resource Acquisition and Delivery within the division of Budget, Acquisitions, and Discovery (BAD), the Electronic Resources (ER) Librarian provides expertise managing the library’s collection of electronic resources and the technologies necessary to maintain access to those resources. The ER Librarian develops and streamlines procedures and workflows for electronic resources and serials, including online journals, electronic books, databases, and websites. The ER Librarian manages the complete lifecycle of electronic resources, spanning cataloging/metadata, access, discovery, assessment, reporting, removal/deletion, and problem resolution and monitors trends and best practices in e-resources management discoverability and the user experience.
Professional librarians hold faculty status. Faculty status allows both voice and vote in University faculty meetings, eligibility to serve on faculty committees, to serve as a student advisor, and to participate in the Program for Enhancing Teaching Effectiveness (PETE); and it acknowledges that those individuals play an active role in the intellectual activities of the University. Faculty status does not carry with it eligibility for tenure or sabbatical, nor does it automatically carry with it faculty rank (Professor, Associate, Assistant Professor, or Instructor), since faculty rank is in a specific academic department, nor does it carry eligibility for other benefits normally assigned to full-time teaching faculty.

Acquiring New Content

  • Collaborate with subject liaisons to identify new electronic content for their subject areas and coordinate trial dates.
  • Communicate trial information to the campus or targeted groups, and provide a feedback mechanism.
  • Compare potential new content with content already included in the Libraries collections to identify overlap.
  • Assist the Head of Resource Acquisition and Delivery and Head of Budget, Acquisitions & Discovery with negotiation of vendor license terms and analysis pricing models.
  • In collaboration with the unit head, draft and manage an RFP if necessary.

Annual Review of Electronic Resources

  • Track, gather, and interpret usage data for decision-making purposes utilizing COUNTER protocols and related software tools
  • Develop key performance indicators for evaluating electronic resources utilizing business intelligence software (Alma Analytics), data visualization, and other relevant data and reporting standards.
  • Generate renewal decision reports for the subject liaisons in advance of the notification date for non-renewal.

Implementation of Electronic Resources

  • Test provided URLs to make sure they work and complete necessary troubleshooting and follow-up with vendors to resolve.
  • Communicate new purchase information to the Integrated Library System Administrator to update the proxy configuration(s).
  • Coordinate the integration of resources and holdings data in a variety of systems such as the library services platform (Alma); the discovery tool (Primo VE), and resources in LibGuides; Google Scholar; OCLC; and similar.
  • Assist unit head in coordination and communication of new purchase information, collaborating with the cataloging team to facilitate bulks loads, record enhancement and metadata processing.
  • Add administrative login information and access notes to the library services platform, test on-campus and remote access to the interface, and add any library branding and link resolver information if necessary.

Marketing of Electronic Resources

  • Provide promotional materials to the subject liaisons and the social media and marketing team.
  • Coordinate information sessions and vendor visits when required or if requested by the liaisons and/or teaching faculty.
  • Monitor the usage of the discovery service (Primo VE) and coordinate with colleagues in BAD, the Discovery Working Group, and the Web Technologies Librarian as necessary to make adjustments to enhance the user experience and optimize front-end discoverability.
  • Proactively participate in initiatives to enhance the discovery and use of library resources to meet the campus’s research and curricular needs.

Ongoing Evaluation and Access of Electronic Resources

  • Monitor user group discussion lists and vendor marketing emails for broader access issues or upcoming changes to e-resources.
  • Collaborate with the cataloging team on loading and managing new and updated e-resource records; additionally, manage the bulk deletion and cleanup of de-selected records.
  • Coordinate the troubleshooting and prompt resolution of access-related problems reported by students, faculty & staff, collaborating with colleagues from the Library, Information Services, and vendor technical support contacts, as necessary.
  • Monitor updates to proxy configurations for library e-resources and communicate that information to the Integrated Library System Administrator.
  • Assist with the maintenance, testing and optimization of the library’s discovery tool

Professional Activities

  • Develop and maintain knowledge of trends and practices in electronic resource management.
  • Serve on library and university committees and task forces; participate in local consortia and regional and national associations.


  • Thorough understanding of the lifecycle of electronic resources and demonstrated ability to manage and maintain the data and record-keeping required to track and manage electronic purchases, subscriptions, activation workflows, maintenance, and licenses.
  • Experience with electronic resources licensing and understanding of the legal framework in which it takes place. That framework includes copyright, privacy, freedom of expression, equal rights (e.g., the Americans with Disabilities Act), and intellectual property.
  • Commitment to maintaining awareness of trends and ongoing developments in areas related to the entire life cycle of electronic resources, and ability to recommend and apply new standards or best practices as needed
  • Conceptual and practical knowledge of standards, protocols, and structures such as MARC, internet protocols (IP) and file transfer protocols (FTP), OpenURL/z39.50, central authentication services (Shibboleth, EZproxy), electronic data interchange (EDI), embedded order data (EOD), COUNTER usage reports, etc.
  • Conceptual knowledge of database design (SQL), data analytics, markup languages (e.g., HTML, XML), and preservation tools; practical experience in one or more of these areas preferred
  • Conceptual and practical knowledge of software such as link resolver, data collection, and discovery services, electronic resources management (ERMS), administrative functions of proprietary databases, bibliographic utilities, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze, manipulate, and provide meaningful interpretation of data using spreadsheets, business intelligence and/or word processing programs, and other online tools.
  • Possesses a broad understanding (or ability to acquire such knowledge) of the electronic resources subscribed to by the organization and the ability to examine and evaluate current and potential purchases in objective and user-centered ways (assessment).
  • Demonstrates problem solving, organization, and analytical skills and has an aptitude for detail-oriented work.

  • 2-3 years of functional knowledge of or proven expertise in one or more of the following fields: electronic resources, acquisitions, technical services, and/or library systems; cataloging experience or training preferred but not required
  • MLS from ALA-accredited program or equivalent international degree required


  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week

Pay Grade 7 (Hiring Range $52,829.00 to $69,999.00 annually)
