DESCRIPTION:
The Lynchburg Public Library is seeking a compassionate and collaborative librarian who loves working with adults. This position is responsible for creating and delivering innovative programming, providing reference and readers’ advisory to all ages, and supporting outreach efforts. The ideal candidate will have experience working in an urban library environment and possess a strong commitment to providing excellent customer service with enthusiasm, energy, and professionalism.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Demonstrate a solid commitment to customer service with patrons and withcoworkers to create an environment that is welcoming to the public and fellow employees.
  • Assist patrons of all ages in finding library materials to meet their informational, educational, and recreational needs while maintaining the appropriate atmosphere so all can fully utilize the library resources.
  • Ability to work with all types of people in an urban library environment.
  • Conduct thorough reference interviews.
  • Advise patrons on material selection to best meet their needs.
  • Possess a strong commitment to Reader's Advisory.
  • Independently prepare and present programs that are creative, meaningful, and tailored to the needs of the community. Work collaboratively with the Adult Services team to plan and schedule programs.
  • Create and implement marketing strategies to promote Adult Services programs aand activities as well as library resources within the community; can include making flyers, writing press releases, and creating online promotional material.
  • Ability to assist patrons with tablets, e-readers, computers and other forms of technology.
  • Collaborate on adult collection development with a team of professional librarians.
  • May select appropriate print, electronic, and audio/video materials to meet the needs of the community.
  • Coordinates Inter-Library Loans for the Lynchburg library system.
  • May help maintain library web pages, social media accounts and other web developing tools; may serve as a member of the library Web Team.
  • Keeps current with technology and social media trends.
  • Attend professional workshops, webinars and other continuing education activities. · Stay informed of emerging trends in the library profession through broad reading of books and professional journals.  

Additional Duties:  

  • Must be able to work nights and weekends.
  • Collaborates with other library staff members as requested on special projects.  
  • When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • May train and supervise clerical and/or paraprofessional staff in specific task  

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master's degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution or comparable public library experience. General knowledge of the principles and methods of modern library services, including automated systems, social media and digital resources.  Prior public library experience required.  Library programming experience and creativity preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Depending on assignment, possession of valid driver's license issued by Commonwealth of Virginia and acceptable driving record according to City criteria may be required.

Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment.  May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
