Library Director

General Description:
The Library Director is responsible for managing all aspects in the operation of the library. This includes services, technology, facilities, budget, staff and the Collections of the PCPL. The Director is the face of the library and works with community members and groups, county administrative personnel, county department leaders and patrons to meet the needs of the community. The Library Director reports directly to the PCPL’s Board of Trustees.

Expectations and Duties:
The following are examples of the duties and expectations of the director.
These are examples only and do not include all expectations and duties or exclude any expectations or duties.

  • Develop an annual budget in conjunction with the Library Board.
  • Submit the annual budget to County Officials.
  • Attend budget meetings as needed, answer questions posed by county officials and justify expenses as needed
  • File all necessary forms and paperwork for Va. State funding.
  • Attend all library Board of Trustee meetings.
  • Provides monthly reports and updates to the Library Board on the programs, activities, staffing and any other information that is pertinent to the library’s operation.
  • Communicates openly, honestly and accurately to the Board.
  • Provides administrative support to the Library Board and assists the Board Chair in preparing the agenda for board meetings.
  • Alerts the Library Board to any issues or challenges facing the library and recommends solutions.
  • Develop a relationship with the community by planning out-reach programs and attending community events.
  • Develop a relationship with patrons with a willingness to personally serve and ensure patron needs are met.
  • Promote the Library and its services in the community.
  • Develops programs and services that address the needs of the community.
  • Attend Friends of the Library meetings and work with the group in a cordial and cooperative manner.
  • Hires and manages all Library Staff.
  • Communicates well with staff and encourages input from staff.
  • Provides staff with opportunities for individual growth and initiative.
  • Ability to provide a work environment that is both successful and pleasant for all staff.

Salary Range for this position is $73,000 to $80,000

This position requires a Masters Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) – accredited institution.

A successful candidate will have either seven (7) years of professional librarian’s experience or a combination of management experience and professional librarian’s experience.
