Provides professional library services involving planning and supervision of the Youth Services section of the library.

Essential Functions

  1. Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff.
  2. Provides general to difficult reference/information questions in person, by telephone, and by email.  Uses library catalog reference books, internet, and various library and subscription databases to find information; maintains reference transactions, statistical sheet, and prepares various reports.
  3. Assists and instructs customers in the use of print and online materials and technology.
  4. Advises and assists customers in the selection of books, periodicals, media, and other materials.
  5. Ensures compliance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  6. Responds to complaints and questions related to Youth Services or other library operations.
  7. Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review, modify data or search for customer inquires.
  8. Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, special programs, summer reading program, statistical reports, spreadsheets, or other documents.
  9. Compiles and/or monitors various administrative and/or statistical data pertaining to Youth Services.
  10. Conducts output measures established by Public Library Association.
  11. Represents the Library in contacts with various community groups and organization.
  12. Plans and implements programs for all ages.
  13. Provides outreach to local schools and agencies as applicable.
  14. Work in coordination with the Technical Services Coordinator to maintain the Youth Services Collection, including e-resources.

  • Skilled in use of a variety of storytelling techniques appropriate for youth of different age levels.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Must possess a Master’s degree from an ALA accredited school; 3 -5 years of previous youth services experiences and supervisory experience. Supplemented with experience in library operations, program coordination, and working with children; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Special Requirements
Must obtain satisfactory results of a criminal history background check.
Ability to obtain a Professional Library Certificate issued by the Virginia Public Librarian Certification Commission.

Working Conditions
Tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing kik stools, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (20 - 30 pounds). May involve long periods of standing and carrying books, and requires the ability to push and pull a fully loaded cart of books to a designated location which may weigh up to 100 pounds.   Assignment may require a rotating schedule which may include working evenings and weekends.
