DESCRIPTION:    Chesapeake Public Library is seeking a Network Engineer I that would provide great customer service and assist with the Library's  commitment  to excellence. This position, under the supervision of the Systems Analyst Ill  IT Manager, will assist in the management and security of the organization's complete network and enterprise infrastructure. In addition, the selected candidate will support security and audiovisual systems utilized by the organization.

The purpose of the class is to support the City's computer networks. The class is responsible for designing, installing, and maintaining computer networks, preparing documentation, providing technical assistance, and related administrative duties. The class works within broad policy and organizational guidelines; independently plans and implements projects; reports progress of major activities through periodic conferences and meetings.


  • Network Infrastructure Support and Security which include, but not limited to: switches, routers, Cisco Wireless Controllers, Meraki Access Points, Cisco Firepower and other related equipment.
  • Cisco (UCS) Administration and Configuration, including VoIP support and voice mail.
  • VMware Environment Administration and Configuration.
  • Server Administration including, but not limited to: Windows Server, Exchange, SCCM and Microsoft Active Directory.
  • SAN Administration  on premises and/or cloud.
  • Assist in building security system administration and any audiovisual equipment/systems.
  • Customer Service to include ability to solicit information and specifications from other IT staff and other stakeholders for designing new networks or modify existing systems.
  • Prepare various network documentation which can include charts, block diagrams and other information for system changes or maintenance.
  • Collaborate with the Systems Analyst Ill  IT Manager to review, compare and/or recommend network and server architecture.
  • Perform backup of various data in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Assist in end user support, which include desktop management, VDI (Citrix XenDesktop) and other applications as needed.
  • Collaborate with City IT network and infrastructure teams to address any network and/or server configuration needed to maintain seamless connectivity between the City and Library networks.
  • Attend trainings and meetings as needed plus provide training to other staff if necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


  • CompTIA A+ and/or Network+ Certified
  • Cisco Certifications  Voice, Router, Switches, Wireless Microsoft Certifications  Server, Desktop
  • Experience in Data Center Support including but not limited to: Dell EMC, VxRail Two or more years of experience in a Help Desk environment
  • Two or more years of experience in a library, nonprofit or government environment.

Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field.

In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this position requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.

Requires a valid driver's license and a driving record in compliance with the City's Driving Standards.

Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or Citywide emergencies.
