Job Description
Piedmont Virginia Community College is seeking a full-time Collection Development/Cataloging Librarian. This is a 12-month, Administrative Faculty position.

Duties: Performs original and copy cataloging based on current standards, batch loads e-book records, and collaborates with the circulation/access librarian in the maintenance of the online catalog. Conducts collection development with a particular focus on books, both print and electronic. Participates in library, college, consortium, and regional/national activities as appropriate. Contributes to the College’s and library’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

  • Performs original and copy cataloging of all library materials to facilitate their identification, access, and use.
  • Maintains professional cataloging standards, including monitoring and staying current with OCLC, USMARC, RDA, LCSH, AACR2.
  • Maintains and assesses the collection, including long-term space planning, removal of print materials, and the creation of policies and procedures governing the print collection.
  • Responsible for recommending collection materials to the director of library services.
  • Purchases all library materials following state purchasing guidelines.
  • Maintains library financial records, assists director of library services with budgeting, and keeps accurate collections statistics.
  • Oversees periodical subscriptions and maintenance of the periodical collection.
  • Assists students, faculty and staff with reference, library research and information literacy skills.
  • Serves as an embedded librarian in class sections as assigned by the reference/instructional librarian.
  • Teaches library instruction classes as needed.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises one part-time employee.
  • Develops, reviews, and updates library policies in consultation with the director of library services.
  • Works collaboratively with other library personnel to accomplish strategic goals.
  • Participates in professional development activities.
  • Serves on college-wide teams and committees as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the director of library services.

Required Qualifications:
1.    Master’s degree in library science or library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution
2.    Strong oral and written communication skills
3.    Superior customer skills
4.    Excellent organizational and time management skills
5.    Detail oriented and persistent
6.    Ability to handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and work well under pressure, independently, and in a team-oriented environment
7.    Ability to adapt to changing and evolving library procedures, priorities, and information technologies
8.    Ability to perform original or copy cataloging
9.    Experience with collection development and analysis
10.    Ability to provide assistance to students, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds
11.    Ability to teach information literacy skills

Preferred Qualifications:
1.    Working knowledge of RDA, MARC bibliographic and authority records, LCSH, and LC Classification.
2.    Experience with Exlibris’ Alma, OCLC Connexion, YBP/GOBI, and eVA.
3.    Experience in a community college environment and a commitment to the community college mission.
