Evening Reference Training and Technology Specialist (00732A) – Full-time position

The position provides consistent, high-level service to users during weekday evening hours at the Learning Commons Help Desk in Perry Library, including in-depth reference and research assistance, circulation of library resources, and assistance with other library, student support services, and technical questions. The position trains new student workers and staff, and oversees student workers when staffing Help Desk.

Required Qualifications
Demonstrated considerable knowledge of academic library research resources and tools. Demonstrated knowledge of effective customer service and problem resolution techniques. Demonstrated problem solving and critical thinking skills. Demonstrated skills in word processing and spreadsheet applications. Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Effective time management and organizational skills to plan and prioritize work to meet deadlines. Demonstrated ability to work well in a diverse team environment, as well as independently. Demonstrated ability to interpret bibliographic information. Demonstrated ability to follow and interpret policies and procedures in performing detailed work. Considerable work experience in providing customer service in a busy setting. Some experience in leading and directing the work of others. Some experience in training others.  Some experience with Microsoft Office applications, especially Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications
Some knowledge of library systems, services, and organization. Some experience working in a library. Some experience with integrated library systems and working knowledge of circulation functions. Working knowledge of Library of Congress classification system. Some experience working with media equipment.  Some experience working in higher education. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training or experience.

Conditions of Employment
Regular work schedule is Monday-Friday 12pm– 9 pm. In accordance with Executive Directive #18 issued by Governor Ralph Northam effective September 1, 2021, all Old Dominion University employees who enter the workplace or work remotely must disclose their vaccine status to the designated university personnel.  Employees who are not fully vaccinated or who refuse to disclose their current vaccine status, must undergo weekly COVID-19 testing and disclose weekly the results of those tests to designated university personnel.
