Job Announcement
The Lancaster Community Library seeks a forward thinking team player to manage the Circulation Department. Duties include public service, programming and outreach, inter-library loan, planning, training, and evaluation. The Circulation Desk Manager recommends reading materials to patrons with an emphasis on services to teens and adults; performs other duties as assigned; and works with the management team to further the goals and objectives of the Lancaster Community Library. Supervises Circulation staff and volunteers. Reports to the Library Director. Applications will be accepted until a suitable pool of candidates is received.

Schedule: This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week, with some evenings and weekends as assigned.

Duties to Include:

  • Oversee circulation desk operations, policies and procedures, and clearly explain to patrons, volunteers, and staff with excellent customer service.
  • Assist and/or coordinate the hiring, scheduling, training and supervision of Circulation Desk staff and volunteers.
  • Promote library services to the community.
  • Prioritize duties, answer questions promptly and politely, manage technology, and monitor cash.  
  • Keep current on public library trends through professional literature and/or workshops.  
  • Assure that processes, procedures, and equipment are up-to-date and suggest new ways to meet the needs of the public.
  • Provide reference and reader’s advisory services for patrons via telephone, email or in person based on sound knowledge of information resources and instructs patrons in the use of library print and electronic resources.  
  • Maintain familiarity with library collection and purchase or aid in purchasing materials.
  • Communicate with the Library Director and management team regarding all circulation and network issues and policies.
  • Participate with the Library Director and other supervisors in defining library goals, evaluating existing services, planning new services and recommending policies for adoption by the Trustees.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of the principles, standards, and practices of library science.
  • Knowledge of library reference sources and methods;
  • Ability to provide information service to customers of all ages;
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with others;
  • Ability to exercise tact, good judgment, and initiative;
  • Knowledge of word processing and computer applications;
  • Ability to community effectively orally in person or on the telephone, and in writing to answer reference questions and provide reading guidance;
  • Ability to understand and interpret policies;
  • Ability to promote interest in library services;
  • Ability to plan and provide community-oriented library programs and outreach;
  • Ability to adapt to workplace change.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
Directly supervises Circulation Desk staff and volunteers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree and at least two years of circulation experience in a public library; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Strong customer service skills, knowledge of literature, and technology skills. Proficient internet search skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited university and two or more years of experience working in a public library. Some demonstrated experience and proficiency with staff and volunteer management, and collection maintenance. Demonstrated proficiency in using Google Suite applications.

Special Requirements:
Completion of a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, wrist and shoulder movements. Ability to stand for 2 hours at a time. Ability to shelve materials at all height levels. Ability to stoop, bend, reach, squat, and kneel. Ability to push and pull 4-wheeled book bins filled to capacity. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Panel interview and may include a written exercise.
