Teen Services Coordinator (Librarian II)
Full-Time / 40 Hours Per Week

The Beatley Central Library is seeking enthusiastic, tech-savvy candidates for a Teen Services Coordinator position. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with tweens and teens, have exceptional customer service skills, be able to plan and present exciting and innovative system-wide programs, including programs with emerging technologies, represent the Library at a variety of outreach events and programs, and contribute to a busy central library. Under the supervision of the Youth Services Manager, this position is responsible for planning, presenting, and evaluating system-wide tween and teen programs, acting as a liaison between the Library and local schools and other organizations, strategically utilizing emerging technologies, and supervising outreach services staff, teen volunteers, and part-time Youth Services Library Pages.


  • Consistently works and collaborates with tweens and teens, ages 10-18, including those with diverse backgrounds and abilities.
  • Coordinates the Library’s tween and teen services system-wide by collaborating with Youth Services staff in developing, implementing, and evaluating the Library’s teen programs and initiatives, as well as ensuring programs meet the goals and priorities of the Library’s five-year plan.
  • Develops, oversees, plans, and implements cutting-edge, virtual, and traditional programs and services for tweens and teens that meet their educational, recreational, and personal needs.
  • Works with the Youth Services Manager on collection development for the young adult collection by evaluating and ordering new materials as well as weeding and maintaining current collections.
  • Supervises and trains teen volunteers, recommending assignments that will make the best use of individual skills, interests, and library needs.
  • Assesses community needs and interests as they pertain to tween and teen services.
  • Leverages community experts and mentors for services and programs in order to meet teens’ needs and interests.
  • Supervises Beatley outreach services staff and part-time Youth Services Library Pages, including interviewing, selecting, training, and evaluating these staff members.
  • Coordinates and represents the Library at regular off-site programs and events, including outreach to local schools, juvenile detention centers, City agencies, businesses, non-profit organizations, and community gatherings. This position will also help plan and manage our future outreach vehicle.
  • Supports the Beatley Central Library Youth Services Department through assisting with other programming initiatives, managing and supporting staff, and working at the Youth Services Desk.
  • Participates in continuing education opportunities such as webinars, seminars, and professional library conferences.
  • Answers reference questions in person, via telephone or e-mail, and provides instruction on using the Library catalog, databases and all equipment in the youth services area.
  • Serves as manager or building officer in the absence of the Youth Services Manager.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent customer service, communication skills, and ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, partner organizations, and the public.
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems.
  • Knowledge of cutting-edge technologies and current trends in teen services.
  • Knowledge of developmental, recreational, and educational needs of young adults.
  • Knowledge of developing and presenting programs and services for children, tweens, and teens.
  • Enthusiasm and enjoyment in working with tweens and teens.
  • Ability to identify and translate young adult needs into effective library services and programs.
  • Ability to learn, stay current, and develop programs with emerging technologies, including promoting the use of technology in staff trainings and meetings.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive partnerships with local organizations.
  • Familiarity with reference services using a variety of print and electronic resources.
  • Some management or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must be able to lift and carry boxes up to 25lbs.

Schedule: Hours are scheduled to meet the needs of the Central Library and will include evenings, Saturdays and occasional Sundays.

Salary: $51,552 - $69,056 annually


  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited library school required.
  • Ability to obtain or have the Virginia professional library license.
  • At least one year of professional library experience at the level of Librarian I.
  • Experience working with teens and children.
  • This position is open until filled.
