Adult Services Manager (Librarian III)
Full-Time (40 Hours a Week) – Beatley Library

The Alexandria Library is looking for an enthusiastic individual to lead its Adult Services team. The ideal
candidate will have exceptional customer service skills and the desire to contribute to a busy, main
library. Under the direction of the Central Library Manager, this position is responsible for supervising
the activities of the Adult Services Department, including overseeing system-wide Interlibrary Loan,
Talking Books, and Sunday service, training and evaluating personnel, developing technology initiatives,
planning programs, collection development and a variety of duties that require a thorough knowledge of
adult services.

Management Duties:

  • Provides overall vision and leadership for Adult Services throughout the Alexandria Library, to
  • include planning and coordinating initiatives and services on a system-wide basis.
  • Works as a member of the Central Library management team and submits information and
  • statistics to the Central Library Manager for monthly and annual reports.
  • Directs and coordinates the activities of the Adult Services Department by formulating goals,
  • plans, procedures, priorities, and schedules.
  • Hires, trains, and evaluates staff within the Adult Services Department at the Central Library.
  • Assists customers with requests for information and library materials.
  • Instructs customers on the use of the library’s online, digital and print resources.
  • In collaboration with the Central Library Manager, coordinates collection development and
  • maintenance for Central Library’s circulating and reference collections.
  • Monitors equipment, such as computers, photocopiers, and printers and requests service as
  • needed.
  • Stays aware of professional trends and continually works to improve adult services.
  • Becomes a passport processing agent and assists in passport processing.
  • Oversees Alexandria Library’s Talking Books Service.
  • Leads Adult Services staff system-wide in regular meetings and programming initiatives, such as Adult Summer Reading.
  • Coordinates programs for adults in order to encourage usage of library materials and services.
  • Creates displays to enhance the library experience and promote use of library resources.
  • Maintains collaborative partnerships with City agencies, community groups, arts organizations and professional library groups.
  • Assists with grant writing for Adult Services initiatives and researches inter-government and foundation assistance to secure support for library programs.
  • Attends conferences, workshops, and meetings and stays up-to-date with emerging technologies.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of information resources and adult services.
  • Management and supervisory skills, including team building, time management, and planning.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of technology including digital services, integrated library systems, and online databases.
  • Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing library environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public, with the library’s business contacts, and with other staff.

Minimum Requirements:
Minimum: Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited school; experience at the level of Librarian II; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities; supervisory experience preferred. Applicant must possess or obtain, within 3 months of hire, a license to practice as a registered professional librarian by the Commonwealth of Virginia. US Citizenship is required for passport services.

Salary: $59,674 - $81,773 annually

Schedule: Hours are scheduled to meet the staffing needs of the library, and will include days, evenings, rotating Saturdays, and occasional Sundays at the Beatley Central Library
