This position is responsible for coordinating the library's youth services, under the guidance of the Library
Director. The position requires public library work experience, with a focus on youth services. Must be
available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and Saturdays.


  • Provides vision for youth services; plans innovative, diverse, and collaborative library experiences for children, teens, parents, caregivers, and families.
  • Coordinates programming for children and teens, including Storytime and the annual Summer Reading Program. May work with local schools and other public service agencies to develop youth programming and other library services.
  • Coordinates the student volunteer program.
  • Provides readers’ advisory and reference service. Assists patrons, including children, parents, students, and teachers, in locating library materials and resources.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of the children’s collection.
  • Assists with the collection and compilation of youth services statistics for Library and state reporting purposes.
  • Plans and conducts outreach activities with local schools; visits classrooms to promote literacy.
  • May work with community organizations to provide information on literacy initiative and provide outreach to inform public of library resources.
  • Conducts library tours and special programs; coordinates field trip visits; responds to patron inquiries.
  • Assists with the preparation and distribution of library promotional materials. Supports the library social media presence and ensures updated content on the library website.
  • Performs Public Service desk duties (charging/discharging items, placing holds, responding to a variety of patron information needs, including assistance with patron PC’s, copier, and fax.)
  • Provides virtual reference and research assistance to patrons when requested.
  • Maintains current knowledge of new developments in the library field, especially related to youth services.
  • Performs related duties.

The Library Director assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor reviews work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines include Library of Virginia guidelines, county and library policies and procedures. The
guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

The work consists of related duties in the provision of youth services to library patrons. Frequent
interruptions contribute to the complexity of the position. The purpose of this position is to coordinate
the library’s youth services operations. Successful performance in this position contributes to the
effective and efficient operation of the library.

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or
crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects and distinguishes
between shades of color. The work is typically performed in a library.

May serve as person-in-charge as needed. Supervises student volunteers.


  • Graduation from college and a master's degree from an accredited library school. Possession of a certificate issued by the Virginia State Board for Certification of Librarians within three months of date of appointment to the position.
  • Professional library work experience in youth services, including reader's advisory and reference.
  • Demonstrated skill in planning, developing, facilitating, and conducting youth programming (in person and virtual) is required.

Two or more years of public library experience with one or more years of experience in youth services.
Strong knowledge of children’s literature for readers' advisory. Experience working with student
volunteers is preferred.
