Seeking detail-oriented, efficient and collegial professional to plan, implement and manage the work of the Technical Services Department.

Essential Duties:

  • Supervises the operations of the Technical Services Department.  
  • Trains, supervises, and evaluates work of Technical Services staff.
  • Maintains efficient workflow and quality control of the work performed in the department.  
  • As Head Cataloger, responsible for the original and copy cataloging performed by the department.
  • Oversees, supervises, and assists in entering library materials into the database in accordance with the MARC standard.   
  • Keeps abreast of changes in cataloging standards.  When necessary, recommends the adoption of bibliographic maintenance standards and authorities in an automated environment, and develops procedures for processing library materials.
  • Manages the materials acquisition funds on TLC’s Online Selection & Acquisitions module.
  • Works with administration to manage acquisitions schedules, liaison with acquisition vendors and perform supply ordering for the department.  Coordinates access and maintenance of the Library's licensed digital resources, including tasks related to contracts, implementation, staff support, troubleshooting, and maintenance of resources.
  • Investigates new technologies at the bequest of the Director/Library Board/Senior staff. Reports on these technologies with a feasibility and cost study.
  • Coordinates the implementation of new technology. Updates senior management on progress.  Coordinates with outside contractors/vendors to ensure that new equipment is correctly located and functioning per standard.  
  • Acts as technology equipment specialist instructing and assisting staff in its use. Troubleshoots technology equipment and acts as liaison with contractors/vendors to correct issues.
  • Works with IT contractor (Tech Team Solution) to ensure staff and public computer needs and updates are completed.
  • Keeps abreast of relevant advances and changes in the library field, and of changes in Handley Regional Library’s policies and procedures.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Professional knowledge of library practices and procedures, particularly in the areas of cataloging standards, practices, and procedures, Dewey Decimal classification, LC subject headings, authority control, acquisitions procedures, and processing of library materials.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.  High-level of computer literacy.  Excellent organizational and time management skills. Attention to detail and accuracy in all phases of work.  Demonstrates judgment and decision-making ability.  Ability to accommodate frequent interruptions and multiple tasks.   
  • Ability to motivate, instruct and supervise subordinates.  Strong interpersonal skills interacting with other staff, patrons and outside contacts.  Ability to plan and conduct meetings.  Ability to conduct statistical research on library operations and to write clear and concise reports.  Ability to interpret library resources and services to the public and to the larger community.
  • General knowledge of integrated library systems currently in use by public libraries – Library.Solution or LS2 applications by The Library Corporation preferred.
  • Practical applied knowledge of the current Microsoft Windows operating system; Microsoft Office software, especially Excel spreadsheets; and of general office equipment including printers, fax machines, and copiers.

 

Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required. ALA accredited Master’s Degree in Library Science preferred.  Previous library experience in Technical Services and in performing cataloging required. Supervisory experience preferred.
