Youth Services Librarian

The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for planning, promoting, and presenting youth and family
programs, providing community outreach, developing and maintaining youth materials collections,
providing information and reader’s advisory services to library users, circulation duties, and clerical
tasks. Work is performed under the general supervision and guidance of the Library Director.

Essential Functions:
-Developing and presenting age appropriate programs and story time
-Planning and presenting Summer Reading Programs and other events for children and teens
-Visiting schools and daycares to promote library services
-Representing the library at community events for children
-Maintaining statistics
-Utilizing community/library data to select well-balanced and diverse materials for youth collections
using journals, vendors, and media
-Acquiring, cataloging, and weeding materials for youth collection
-Performing reference, reader’s advisory, circulation duties, clerical tasks, and other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
-Knowledge of current library principles, practices, and trends
-Knowledge of children’s and young adult’s literature
-Excellent interpersonal communication skills
-Ability to prepare and present creative programs
-Ability to work directly with the public in a friendly, helpful manner
-Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

Requirements: Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited library
school preferred. Relevant training and experience in a library setting and/or closely related field with
the intent to pursue a library degree considered. Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule,
including some evenings and Saturdays. Must have a valid Virginia driver’s license or reliable
transportation. A successful criminal background investigation is required.

Salary: Starting rate for this full-time, 40 hour per week position will be from $35,000.00 per year,
depending upon experience and qualifications. Benefits include health insurance with family
supplement and Virginia Retirement System.
