CITY OF RADFORD JOB OPENING

Youth Services Librarian – Radford Public Library currently has an opening for a creative, energetic and organized Youth Services Librarian.  The successful candidate will have at least 5 years of public library experience with progressive responsibility.  The Youth Services Librarian must have graduated from an accredited Master’s program in Library Science from an accredited ALA library school.  The Youth Services Librarian will report to the Library Director.  The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for creating, organizing, planning and evaluating library programs for our teen and youth patrons.   

The Youth Services Librarian will directly supervise the Youth Services Specialist and Library Shelvers; will indirectly supervise front line staff and will serve as Interim Director in the absence of the Library Director.  Ability to create and maintain an attractive and appealing youth services area for children and teens including the creation of collection displays and seasonal decorations; give presentations on library resources, children’s books, early literacy and related topics to library staff, parents, educators and caregivers.  Must actively supervise after-school teens in the safe and appropriate use of the facility and equipment; consistently enforce general library policies in the participation of library programs and peer interactions. Assist in developing partnerships in the community to coordinate efforts to meet the needs of youth and build stronger links with community stakeholders.  Assist Director in providing information, data and rationale concerning youth services improvements and needs.   Must develop, plan, market, deliver and evaluate story times to promote reading skills, creativity and growth of youth and children.  Will be self-directed to keep informed of current trends and practices affecting youth services by attending local, regional and state conferences, reading professional journals and networking with area youth coordinators.
