This position serves the College Community by overseeing circulation and technology services offered to the public. Specific responsibilities are to manage and coordinate library public services and ensure excellent customer service is provided at all times.
The position facilitates the use and return of library materials in an efficient and fiscally responsible manner. This position assists library patrons with using the library computers and printing system, provides troubleshooting for computers and printing system and reports network problems. This position also partners with Librarians to answer basic reference questions, and help members of the Thomas Nelson patron community access electronic databases and library resources.

Duties and responsibilities

Core Responsibilities:

  • Provide staff with frequent, constructive feedback, including evaluations as appropriate.
  • Select and provide effective personnel management for Library staff, work-study students, volunteers, etc. who are assigned to provide services for Library events and functions as needed in learning services.
  • Ensure staff have the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to accomplish goals.
  • Ensure performance issues are address and documented as they occur.
  • Staff the circulation desk to provide patron services, including all aspects of circulation function, loaning materials, processing holds, dispatching intercampus loans, updating patron records, billing, etc.
  • Create and manage the daily work schedules for all circulation and technology personnel on the Hampton campus.
  • Assure excellent customer service is provided to patrons including community, students, staff, and faculty supporting the academic needs of users.
  • Assist patrons with use of library equipment and computers, process hold requests, deliver items between Thomas Nelson campuses via courier service, and issues library cards.
  • Work with the Library Supervisor at the Williamsburg campus to ensure policies and procedures are universally applied.
  • Collaborate with College and Virginia Community College System (VCCS) departments as well as library teams to develop and implement library circulation, overdue, billing, inter-library loan, and reserves policies and procedures.
  • Collect, maintain, analyze, and report circulation statistics for assessment purposes.
  • Assist patrons use MS Office and other course-related software programs and library printing system.
  • Assist patrons with routine questions.
  • Conduct basic reference interviews to ascertain patron's information needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Library Science or any equivalent combination of training and/or experience.
  • Experience working with circulation modules and automated library systems.
  • Experience managing circulation services, integrated library system or library services platform.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with effectively using computers and computer software including MS Office, internet tools, and email.
  • Experience using and instructing patrons on library information resources including electronic databases, print, and media.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations to include students, faculty, administrators, and patrons.
  • Ability to assist other staff in the day-to-day operation and management of a library.
  • Ability to employ systematic planning and effective time management techniques.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Independent decision-making skills related to effectiveness of library processes.
  • Ability to navigate Student Information System and learning management systems (such as Canvas).
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and trends in circulation, inter-library loan, traditional and electronic reserves, and document delivery.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Alma integrated library system.
  • Experience working in a community college setting.
  • Experience with conducting processes and paperwork for patron billing of lost library materials.

Special Requirements

Hours of Duty: Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm. Some evenings and weekends may be required.
