The Historical Society Librarian position is the primary point of contact for local history researchers. Responsibilities include management and promotion of the local history collection and providing reference services and adult programming to the public. This position works at both the Central Library and the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society and reports to the Adult Programs and Reference Services Manager.

This is a full-time 40-hour benefits eligible position and requires a flexible schedule including a weekend rotation (Saturday and Sunday) and one evening a week.


  • Selecting, maintaining and organizing the Historical Collection;
  • Providing reference services and other assistance;
  • Promoting the local history collection's services and materials;
  • Ability to work with the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society and other community partners;
  • Planning and presenting adult programs based on the needs and interests of the community;
  • Building and volunteer management responsibilities.


  • Preference for a Master's degree in library science and eligibility for professional certification in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Requires previous experience with historical collections or research;
  • Preference for experience with an integrated library system such as Sierra;
  • Preference for experience with historical research in Jefferson-Madison Regional Library's service area;
  • Preferred for experience with reference on a public service desk.
