Norfolk Public Library (NPL) is seeking an experienced library services professional for the position of Librarian I (Cataloger).  Work involves conducting cataloging services for various formats and subjects and demonstrating a wide knowledge of books and modern library techniques.  The Librarian I (Cataloger) will maintain government documents, ensure the integrity of the online library catalog, integrate local cataloging practices, and assist with the operations of the Technical Services Department.

Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Directs the work of cataloging assistants and processing staff.
  • Assists with overseeing the workflow of Technical Services.
  • Assures database integrity through quality control and by assisting with bibliographic database cleanup and using MarcEdit.
  • Responsible for quality control of cataloged and processed materials.
  • Creates and inputs original MARC cataloging for library materials including print books and serials, government documents, electronic content, audio-visual, music, STEM materials and equipment, electronic games and equipment and other realia using OCLC and other bibliographic utilities.
  • Edits LCMARC and OCLC MARC copy cataloging records.
  • Assigns/checks Dewey Decimal Classification for all materials.
  • Checks, edits and adds authority control records.
  • Creates statistical reports for cataloged and processed materials.
  • Creates and updates cataloging and processing manuals.
  • Serves as Federal Depository Government Documents Librarian.
  • May perform occasional public service work.
  • Participates in team activities and sits on various committees.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Additionally, the successful candidate will have the ability to:

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Sit and type at a computer workstation for extended periods of time; lift up to 35 lbs. from ground to waist; retrieve books and other materials from shelves ranging in height from floor level to  approximately six feet; push and pull loaded book cards; bend; stoop; and climb a step stool.
  • Perform tasks requiring manual dexterity

Work requires professional level of knowledge of a discipline which is acquired in a Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university.
One year of professional cataloging experience in library services or a related field required.

The preferred candidate will possess:      

  • One year of progressively responsible experience as a Professional Librarian.
  • One year of original cataloging experience; cataloging on-line resources; demonstrated understanding of MARC format and its relationship to metadata standards, authority control, and Dewey classification experience.
  • Ability to make cataloging standards judgment and experience with the use of reference materials.
  • Experienced team player with a commitment to excellence and innovation in public library service.
  • State of Virginia Professional Librarian Certification.

Additional Information & Requirements

  • State of Virginia Professional Librarian Certification within six months of employment.

Work Hours:  40 hours per week; Monday - Friday.
Work Location:  NPL Administration & Service Center, 1155 Pineridge Rd, Norfolk, VA 23502.
