The Arlington County Public Library System is seeking an Early Literacy Outreach Librarian to provide readers' advisory and programming services for youth ages 0 to 5, caregivers, and families in our diverse communities. This employee will also represent the library while visiting daycare centers, preschools, and other community partners to promote early literacy to underserved populations. They will need to seek out new community partnerships and maintain relationships and channels of communication with current partners. There will be a general requirement of working at the Columbia Pike Branch Library in a librarian role, including collection maintenance and development in youth services; and operational duties, such as working at the service desk.

Specific duties include:

  • Serving as an outreach librarian by developing and continuing partnerships with County and other non-library organizations;
  • Assisting customers in the use of library resources both onsite and remotely;
  • Participating in the system-wide Youth Services Team and other teams as assigned;
  • Planning and providing programs for youth ages 0 to 5 including story times, book talks, caregiver training, visits to home daycare and daycare centers including Head Start; few on site programs will be required as the bulk of programming will take place off site, and be dependent upon the needs of the parent organization; and
  • Participating in the maintenance of the youth services collection.
  • The ideal employee for this position will be youth and customer service oriented, energetic, enthusiastic, and tech savvy.

Minimum: Master's Degree in Library Science or Information Science from an ALA accredited college or university, plus three years of experience providing customer service in a Librarian role which includes at least one year in the youth services or directly related specialty.
Preference will be given to candidates with graduate or undergraduate course work in youth services or literature, educational programming techniques, or child/adolescent development.


  • Developing new and supporting existing partnerships with non-library organizations;
  • Conducting programs for youth, especially programs for children from birth through age five, and developing early literacy programs and collections;
  • Using social media and creating marketing materials to promote the library and its services;
  • Experience researching and writing grants;
  • Working with limited English speaking youth and families; and/or
  • Bilingual in English and another language.


The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment and maintain, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

Work Hours: Full-time 40 hours per week. Schedule includes at least one evening per week and at least two weekend days per month, possibly more. Employee will be assigned to one of the Arlington Library locations. Current opening is at the Columbia Pike Branch Library, 816 South Walter Reed Drive, Arlington, with a large portion of work taking place off site. Assignment may change over time.

This position is part of a pay for performance salary system within the Department. Entry salary within the band is determined by experience and qualifications. With satisfactory performance, professional development and position growth, employees may advance within the band up to the maximum of the band.
