Law Librarian

Norfolk Law Library seeks a full-time Law Librarian for the operation and management of the law library. Necessary qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science (M.L.S.) and at least one year of experience working in libraries. Work experience that is law-related is preferred.

Duties of the Law Librarian include: responding to legal reference/research questions using print, electronic, and internet sources in an efficient and courteous manner; assisting customers (including attorneys and members of the public) with selecting and locating relevant research materials; communicating library policies and procedures to the public; as well as other duties as assigned by the Norfolk Law Library Board of Directors.

Candidates should demonstrate excellent customer service skills, the ability to supervise and coordinate the work of others, and have knowledge and expertise regarding legal research resources including print and online materials.

Under the supervision of the Norfolk Law Library Board of Directors and the Executive Committee of the Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association, the Law Librarian is responsible for the daily operation and management of Norfolk Law Library and is the primary contact for the public utilizing the Law Library’s resources.  This position requires professional work of a confidential nature, independent judgment, initiative and discretion.

Duties:

  • Responds to all types of legal reference questions using print, electronic, and internet sources in an efficient and courteous manner.  
  • Assists customers in selecting and locating relevant research materials.
  • Keeps abreast of trends in legal information and resources.
  • Makes recommendations for the collection, including digital and print resources.
  • Conducts shelf reading and weeding of collection.
  • Demonstrates use of catalog and electronic databases to customers.
  • Effectively communicates library policies and procedures to the public.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Norfolk Law Library Board of Directors.

Skills, Abilities and Experience:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in a friendly and positive manner with staff and library customers from diverse ethnic, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, including Judges and attorneys and their staffs.   
  • Comfort with working independently in a collegial, team-oriented environment within established policies and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare financial reports.  Financial management encompassing budgeting, payables and payroll.
  • Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of others and perform performance reviews.  Experience with recruiting and hiring.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience with library systems and technology, legal research databases, website design and social media.  Experience with technical services, including cataloging, processing and updating legal materials.
  • Knowledge of legal resources, including print materials and online databases.  Assists customers accomplish their research objectives in person and remotely.
  • Experience in a law library.
  • Enthusiasm for the work and a willingness to try new things.

 

Qualifications:
A Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science (M.L.S.) and at least one year of experience in libraries.  Prior experience in a law library and/or law firm or performing legal research is highly preferred.   A law degree would be beneficial.
