Washington County Public Library, Abingdon, VA, seeks a library director who is dedicated to the profession, possesses a strong understanding of new developments in library service and is a visionary leader. The new director should be energized and inspired by opportunities to move this dynamic library system forward by promoting teamwork among the staff and library board, collaboration with community partners and exercising strong management skills.

WCPL serves a population of 54,000 with four branch libraries, the main library located in Abingdon, an outreach department and a strong virtual presence. WCPL is part of a four member multi-type library consortium that does extensive resource sharing and shares an integrated library system, Innovative Interfaces.

A strong commitment to customer service is a core library value. The library’s service plan emphasizes community engagement achieved by an interdepartmental approach to making contacts and planning activities.

The new director will have the support and assistance of a committed and innovative staff of 20 FTE, including an assistant director, 5 professional librarians and 20 PTE, an active and supportive Friends of the Library, a fiscally strong Foundation and an engaged Library Board.

Location: The Washington County Public Library, nestled in the Virginia Highlands is within driving distance of Roanoke, Asheville, Knoxville, and Nashville and is home to an excellent school system and a wealth of social and community organizations. There is easy access to outdoor and cultural activities and direct access to interstate highways. The main library is located in the historical town of Abingdon, population 9,000 This small town is known for bigger-city amenities. Abingdon is home to a nationally known equity theater. USA Today ranks Abingdon as one of the Best Art Towns and Best Places to Retire.

Responsibilities: The Library Director reports to a seven member Board of Trustees which functions as a governing board. Goals are accomplished through collaboration with the Library Board and key team members who manage library departments. The Director will provide direction and leadership in assessing, evaluating, planning and managing all aspects of the library’s policies, programs and practices to ensure effectiveness and efficiency. The Director will cooperate with members of the library’s consortium and other professional organizations, participate in partnerships with stakeholders, patrons, and government and community agencies and organizations. The ability to exercise sound fiscal management and strong internal and external communication practices is essential. In addition the Director will be expected to strengthen and expand funding sources.

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited program and professional management experience in public libraries. Personal attributes include integrity, excellent interpersonal skills, flexibility, consensus building skills, creativity and a sense of humor. Prior successful experience reporting to and working with a governing board is desirable.

Compensation: The position offers a starting salary range of $57,795 to $79,641 (dependent upon experience and qualifications) with an excellent fringe benefits package.
