Teaching & Learning Engagement Librarian

Position Summary:
Virginia Tech’s University Libraries seeks creative and enthusiastic applicants for the position of Teaching and Learning Engagement Librarian. Working widely across the library system and the University, the core duties of this position will revolve around designing and implementing various types of face-to-face and online learning opportunities for the Libraries’ foundational instruction program, as well as providing liaison services for English, and being a contributing member to community engagement efforts. The Teaching & Learning Engagement Librarian will contribute to implementation of various key initiatives (Digital Literacy, ePortfolio, Data Education, Studios Network, Foundational Instruction Program and the Odyssey Learning Object Repository), with a particular focus on identifying partnership opportunities within the English department. While the core duties of this position will revolve around developing various types of instruction, the successful candidate will also have the ability to customize parts of this position based on their interests and background. Some areas could include digital content production, coordinating instruction, digital pedagogy, educational technology, or learning assessment, just to name a few.

Required Qualifications:
•    ALA accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree
•    Broad knowledge and understanding of face-to-face instruction and online instruction, pedagogy, and principles related to digital and information literacies
•    Strong interpersonal skills in outreach, relationship building, and collaboration
•    Ability to work as part of a team in order to accomplish departmental and institutional goals in a fast-paced, energetic environment
•    Demonstrated learner-oriented approach to instruction and other library services
•    Demonstrated enthusiasm for teaching and learning

Preferred Qualifications:
•    Understanding of current and emerging trends, concepts, and theories in instructional technology and online learning, including the ability to create instructional content for an online audience
•    Experience or coursework related to assessment of instructional initiatives
•    Experience delivering instruction and outreach
•    Evidence of successful project management skills.

Job Duties:
Reports to the Head, Foundational Instruction and Community Engagement

70%    Contributing to and assisting with development of the Libraries’ foundational instruction program, to include collaborating with faculty and library colleagues on strategic initiatives such
as Digital Literacy and ePortfolios, within the context of the English curriculum. Designing, developing and delivering instruction (face-to-face, blended, and online) for First Year
Writing courses. Collaborating with colleagues to identify strategic areas within the curriculum to pilot innovative pedagogies and High-Impact Practices.  Promotes the digital literacy framework implementation to university partners and contributes to and promotes the ePortfolio program to faculty and students in the English department.

20%    Liaison librarian to the English department. Cultivate partnerships with members of the Virginia Tech community as liaison for English, including support for: research, instruction, collection needs, and outreach. Reach out to and engage with faculty, staff and students to communicate resources and services of University Libraries, including providing referrals; develop and maintain relationships including participating in meetings or events, and communicating news and needs back to the University Libraries; Research Assistance: provide customized research assistance and consultations; Instruction: assess needs, develop and teach in-person, hybrid, and online sessions, workshops, or courses; create and maintain online subject guides and other resources, and facilitate access via referrals to a wide array of University Libraries research support services; Support department/college curricula; Collections: Assist with development, evaluation, maintenance, and promotion of collections for liaison areas; manage appropriate firm order funds and recommend library subscriptions; Partnerships: Develop and provide customized services; Collaborate with liaison areas or related VT groups, such as destination areas and strategic growth areas on special projects and strategic initiatives such as Digital Literacy and ePortfolios.

10%    Maintains current awareness in the library profession and related fields. Serves actively on appropriate departmental, library, university and professional committees. Contributes to the knowledge base of the profession through research, publication, and professional engagement. Provides quality services in a professional manner with demonstrated commitment to team efforts, service excellence and diversity and inclusion. Performs other duties as assigned.

Salary: Minimum $50,000 dependent on qualifications and experience
