Suffolk Public Library is looking for a passionate, innovative individual ready to lead the Library Location Services Department at our Morgan Memorial Library location in historic downtown Suffolk. This individual would lead our front line staff team, providing training on new policies and procedures, serving as a leader in customer service, and working with other departments on projects to ensure that the Suffolk Public Library is a community-focused organization that can adjust to the changing needs of its community. The ability to innovate, evaluate current systems in order to identify gaps, and be comfortable with change are vital qualities of the successful candidate.

This position is also key in developing community relationships in the library by engaging people through excellent customer service and advocating for library services and programs.

Under general supervision, provides coordination and supervision of Location Services in the Suffolk Public Library. Work involves coordinating the activities of the assigned area of responsibility, supervising subordinate staff, collaborating with the public, other City departments and agencies and preparing various reports and schedules. In addition to their specialized tasks, employee is also responsible for performing such duties as checking library materials in and out, collecting overdue fines, accepting reserve requests and providing reference assistance to library patrons. Employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in planning and organizing aspects of library services. Employee must also exercise tact and courtesy in frequent contact with library patrons and the general public.

Examples of Duties:
Coordinates and supervises the operations of a specialized area in the Suffolk Public Library System.  Hires, trains, supervise, and evaluates subordinate staff and provides guidance to volunteers in the work to be performed and ensures compliance with library policies and procedures.  Schedules, coordinates, and provides training to staff working the front desk of the library.  Performs tasks at the circulation desk of the library including checking library materials in and out, preparing books to be shelved, registering and processing library cards, collecting materials for the book depository, and securing the library at the end of the business day.  Directs, advises, provides, assists, and instructs patrons with locating library materials, answering reference and directional questions, and placing reserve requests. Receives, reviews, and responds to patron complaints.  Attends or conducts staff meetings to exchange information; attends in-service training and/or professional classes, seminars, or conferences to further develop professional skills.  Assists with outreach events and programs as needed.  Supervises and plans guidelines for tasks, organize projects, and implements duties in circulation and public services.  Supervises and continuously trains staff, and volunteers in the use of the technical support system, and varying library policies and procedures.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  A combination of higher education and/or experience equivalent to 5 years, 1 of which must have been in a library setting or closely related customer service field; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Requires a valid driver's license.
