POSITION: Technical Services Librarian

The Kelly Library at Emory & Henry College is seeking an innovative Technical Services Librarian. This position performs professional and supervisory work managing the Technical Services Department. This includes planning, developing, and coordinating services and resources related to cataloging, classification, and physical preparation of materials for use by patrons as well as planning for services and resources related to digital institutional repository collections. Reports to the Library Director.


  • Supervises one full-time and one part-time technical services staff members
  • Performs all print acquisitions operations: pre-order searching, ordering process (including handling materials on backorder and standing order and searching for out-of-print materials, as well as print serial subscription maintenance), receiving and routing to cataloging
  • Produces original cataloging and provides classification when needed
  • Supervises all copy cataloging, serials operations, and physical material processing
  • Maintains fund accounting for materials budgets and processes invoices for print materials
  • Participates in ongoing collection development and weeding based upon current needs
  • Actively participates in the continued operation of the shared online system of the local consortium. Performs authority work and database maintenance as needed
  • Provides expertise and oversight to the planning and preparation for a proposed digital institutional repository.
  • Participates in the library information literacy instruction program
  • Staffs on-call reference shifts on a regular basis and serves in the evening and weekend rotation
  • Assists in data collection and analysis for assessment purposes
  • Coordinates and trains staff and student assistants in the functions related to technical services


  • MLIS, MLS, or MIS from an ALA-accredited institution
  • Thorough knowledge of current library principles and practices for cataloging, acquisitions, serials, authority control, and digital metadata
  • Familiarity with current and developing technologies in libraries and higher education
  • Ability to work on and/or supervise multiple staff and projects effectively
  • Professional written, oral, and presentation skills and have experience using a variety of software applications applicable to libraries, higher education, and the workplace
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to establish rapport with students, faculty, and staff colleagues as well as vendors and services providers



  • Technical services experience in an academic library
  • Experience creating or managing digital collections or an institutional repository
