The Martha S. Grafton Library of Mary Baldwin University is currently seeking a collaborative team member to fill the following position:
Position: Instruction and Outreach Librarian


  • The Instruction and Outreach Librarian will take the lead in building learner-centered programming and engagement activities that foster student success.
  • This position will design, deliver, and assess innovative instruction and research services, with particular consideration for students and faculty in online programs.
  • This position will work collaboratively with colleagues throughout the library and the broader Mary Baldwin community to enhance and strengthen the library’s role within the transformative culture of Mary Baldwin.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:  

  • Develop dynamic library instruction for groups, including the for-credit information literacy class, and provide one-on-one research consultations.
  • Create and deliver programs that enhance the library’s role in student and faculty scholarship and in other academic and creative initiatives.
  • Collaborate with other campus constituencies, such as the Academic Success Center, Instructional Technology, and the Office of Student Engagement, to offer mutually beneficial programming.
  • Create and manage an annual preternship with an incoming student in an area related to outreach and instruction.
  • Work to extend the library’s presence in the larger Staunton and library communities.
  • Develop promotional materials that effectively communicate the library’s goals, services, and news to a variety of audiences across multiple platforms.
  • Deliver in-person and virtual reference assistance.



  • ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library or Information Services and preferably one or more years of library reference and instruction experience.  
  • Familiarity with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy.
  • Academic library experience preferred.
  • Strong user-centered service philosophy.  
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and enthusiasm for collaboration.

Job type: This is a full-time, staff position.
