According to recent reports, academic libraries have struggled to ensure representative numbers of library employees of color, finding that 71 percent of staff in U.S. academic libraries identify as white, (Schonfeld, R. Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity: Members of the Association of Research Libraries. August 2017.) In response to this report, W&M Libraries developed the Mosaic Diversity Program, which provides valuable, paid library work experience to recent graduates interested in exploring library careers. Applicants of minority backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. Selected individual(s) will be matched with a library project that appeals to their interest and skill set. The fellowship program also includes mentorship and programming around topics including diversity and inclusion, librarianship, and issues in higher education. Required Qualifications:  

  • Recent graduate of a 4-year institution of higher education in Virginia.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Expressed interest in diversity and inclusion.
  2. Stated interest in libraries and/or library careers.
  3. Strong communication skills.
  4. Ability to work independently, and also as part of a team.
  5. Willingness to learn, ask questions, and seek solutions.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Restricted position: One-year term; approximate dates are August 2019 – August 2020 with some flexibility on start/end dates. Up to 1499 hours for the year term (average 29 hours per week).
  • All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed, on average, 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year.
  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.
